54 Trans Problem

I'm not sure whats wrong with my PG. The speedo gear is at a 45 degree angle and will not mate properly with the output shaft. All pics I can find the speedo gear is at a 90 degree angle. My trans case number is 3702602, maybe someone in the past put in a passenger car trans and changed the tail piece? The trans is operable but did not have a speedo gear when I purchased the car. Now I know why. Are the trans cases the same between the vettes and passenger cars? Could I have the wrong sleeve that the speedo drive gear is on? Or could I have an incorrect output shaft?

Has anyone experienced this before?

Cathy, Im not a C1 expert, but I believe that the speedo driven gear shafts have different shaft lengths, than the current gears you buy today, this may result in the cable not engaging into the gear.
A quick check to check the cable engagement in the speedometer head is to spin the cable with you finger tips and look at the speedo for movement, the next step is lift rear wheels off the ground and spin the drive shaft or rear wheels to watch for the speedo gear in transmisson for rotation. if all is fine the cable maynot be engaging into the gear on trans.

The trans is out of the car and I cannot screw in the speedo gear because the angle with the drive gear is wrong.

Cathy, sorry I'm not much help, maybe Roy Braatz may chime in maybe he'll have a to answer the problem. the old cast iron power gluide is a different animal than what im use to.

You say the trans is out of the car?
If so, can you take a couple pictures so we can
see what you're looking at and post them?

With Brett and Roys help I believe I understand the problem. I was missing the speedo drive gear on the output shaft.
