    61 corvette speedometer

I had trouble with my speedometer not working from time to time. I made the mistake of pulling out the speedo drive gear, which dropped in the transmission case. Pulled out the transmission and removed and purchased a new one and replaced. Purchased a new rebuilt speedometer cluster in the dash, replaced cable. Speedometer not working at all now. Pulled cable from cluster and drove car, not spinning at all. Crossed my fingers and pulled out speedo drive gear and does not look like it even made contact with the gear that drives it. The speedo drive gear was purchased from Corvette Central PN #531511 61-62 speedo drive gear (22 tooth green), which matched the original one. My car has the 4.11 gears in the rear end of the car. Anyone else run into this issue?

There are at least 3 different lengths of gear housings that go into the transmission. It sounds like the housing is too short.

You cant see wear on a driven gear you replaced , repro cable?? does the cable fit into the driven gear tight (at trans) then recheck , then the other end into the speedo -is it long or to short to fit into it.

I ruled out the cable by installing the old original cable. Have the same issue with both of the cables. I was wondering when I split the case to remove the other plastic speedo gear, somehow the gear does not line up with the worm gear on the shaft. I would not think this would be the case, nothing was touched or moved on the shaft.

Thanks, I will call around on the housing today. I would assume I have the correct one, the speedometer was working a couple of months ago, just bounced really bad.
