John Z's Pictures Of Body Jig For Frame Shims

John Z posted some great pictures & text about factory shims tothe frame for the body mounts. He posted on the CF. Worth a look for people that have not seen them.

C1 & C2 Corvettes - How did they shim the body at the factory? - I was looking through a book last night and noticed that they had all of the shims in place before they were dropping the bodies onto the rolling chassis. How did they know how many shims to put in each location?

Re: John Z's Pictures Of Body Jig For Frame Shims

Pretty Cool Pics. It raises a question for me, I am very close to dropping the body back on my 69 and I don't know what was installed for shims. Unfortunately the guys at the body shop raised the body for me while I was not present and did not save or count the shims at the mounts. So with no reference to work from how do I determine the settings? I really would like to get this right and not hurt my car after all the work I have put in. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What did the jig use as a reference? you need 3 point of reference to establish a plane.

They couldn't have used the body mounts, since they all received shims??

The tooling located on the frame at four gage datum surfaces adjacent to the #2 and #3 body mounts; those surfaces are shown on the detailed frame assembly drawing (and are not shown on the frame diagram in the Chassis Service Manual).

Ever wonder how it was handled when two of those four frame gage locations in opposite corners (#2L and #3R) were high? The frame would rock back/forth on the two high locations. (for 63-67 frames) Same for the system used for C3 but opposite.

Three locations instead of four would eliminate this issue.

This is what I was thinking.
The engineering drawings them must show the distance between the top of the frame side rails and the bottom of the birdcaged rocker channels.
Anyone know what the dimension is supposed to be.

With todays spinning lasers, we should be able to to determine what the shim count should be before placing the body on just like the factory.

Actually I've already done this on my frame, but I used 3 of the 4 body mounts (#2 and #3) for lining up the laser to produce a reference plane, then I could tell how far off the 3 rd body mount was. Then I could check #1 and #4 using the dimension on the frame drawings.
