    70 Turn Signal Flasher

Does anyone know where I can purchase an original turn signal flasher for my 70. The tech manual says it could be manufactured by Ideal Corp, Tung-Sol or Signal Stat? The part number for all is listed as #536. If they are difficult to find, is there an alternative that would be given at least some originality consideration during judging? Tx

The 4 way flasher is a 536 (mounted on the fuse block).

The turn signal was more likely a Tungsol 224 - light blue with a split nipple on the end. I think it is also plastic, not a metal container.

I'm not 100% positive, but pretty darn sure
Mabye the experts can chime in ....

There are a couple NCRS folks that sell these - I would check the Driveline for ads...

If not there - always FleaBay

      Bill/Joe,
You are correct about the #536 for the hazard warning and #224 blue plastic for the turn signals. At least thats what the judging guide says. My Bowtie 70 #14803 has a #552 for a hazard flasher and the stamp date is right for my car. I think #552's and possibly #536's were used in the 70 modal year. 71's and 72's did not use that #552.
      Just my $0.02.

When did "DOT" first appear on the 224? I have a non-DOT with a '69 date for my car and several with DOT with later dates.

          Jeff,
Based on my cars the latest of which is 71 #21467 (last week of 71 production) none of the #224's #552 or #536's have DOT markings. The latest #224 is dated 1 9 1 or the 19th week of 1971 (2nd week of May). Based on that I would say DOT markings appeared in the 72 MY or later. Maybe someone has more info on that.
Also all the original #536's I have seen in cars are natural finish.

              Joseph,

I had a similar problem with finding the correct 4 way flasher for my '68. I used Nick Caputo at the Oldtime Garage, Corning, Ca., 530-824-4989. He had just what I needed and with a reasonable price. Give him the manufacturers and the model number and he will most likely have it.

                  Hi Joseph,
I had good luck buying a NAPA replacement flasher and replacing it's metal cover with the TS 224 blue plastic cover from my 71's flasher, which had given up the ghost. There's a slight difference in the color of the base but I was satisfied.
                  Regards,
                  Alan

                    Re: 70 Turn Signal Flasher

In the lore of NCRS-dom, the 224 flasher is cited as having made the transition from metal can to blue plastic packaging circa the beginning of '66 production. FYI, there are TWO versions of the non-DOT blue platic packaging: one with a straight/flat top and the other with the familiar 'snap-in' protrusion that some cars used to mount the flasher into a square hole in underdash reinforcements vs. using a discrete flasher holding clip. The non-DOT plastic can with flat top is a rather rare birdie to find!

On 224's in the Shark era, the 53-72 edition of the Corvette Parts and Accessory Manual has an interesting 'Note' when you look up the TS flasher by PN. The note reads to the effect 'LF 224'. I take that to mean Littlefuse was an approved supplier of this flasher (at least for service and by 1972)...

We see quite a few Littlefuse electrical parts on '70-72 Corvettes that are known to be factory original (emission relays, Etc.). So, we KNOW Littlefuse was a legitimate supplier to the St. Louis assy line in that era. I wouldn't be surprised if their version of the 224 TS flasher was also in the GM system as an approved part!

My car is last day of production '71 (7,15,71). I have a 536 in the fuse panel and a natural finish TS552 under the dash dated 081. The JG says it should be a 536 also. Will that be a deduct?

                        Re: 70 Turn Signal Flasher

That will depend on the specific judges working your car's interior. The 552 flasher IS incorrect for the TS function as it was designed to handle multiple lamp loads (like the 536 flasher used in the emergency flasher circuit).

GM designers kept using lamp load specific flashers (like the 224) for turn signal applications because the blink rate would change when bulbs burned out giving the driver a 'heads up' warning. Many replaced the factory original, lamp load specific, flasher in the TS position with a 552 because it was a 'universal' way to effect repair. You didn't have to sort inventory for a correct 'matching' flasher to get up and running.

When a given part differs from what's expected/known to be factory original, judges are taught to divide the available originality points along a five axis universe (Finish, Date, Installation, Configuration and Completeness). So, I'd expect the 552 flasher to fail Finish, Date, and Configuration for a 60% originality deduction with the jury being out on the issue of Completeness depending on whether your car is radio equipped and the flasher HAS its radio RF capacitor + fiche paper insulator installed on it...

But, some judges might opt for a TOTAL deduction based on the part being completely WRONG for the application based on the Judging Reference Manual's standard deduction rule on parts that are completely incorrect...
