Idle Control Solenoid (Joe Lucia - Help!)

Question on my 1973 LS4 auto regarding the Idle Control Solenoid a/k/a Idle Stop Sloenoid a/k/a Anti-diesel Solenoid:

I bought the car with what appears to be a non-AC Delco aftermarket solenoid with a sticker that reads
    1180
    81408*
It lost full points in judging.

I bought an NOS AC Delco DR1997409. According to the Judging Guide, this is for a L48 or L82. Judging Guide says LS4 takes 1997417.

Does anyone know the difference between these two? Is there any downside to installing the 1997409 on my LS4, given I've got an incorrect solenoid on there now?

Looking at the various parts catalogs, none of the vendors seem to make a distinction between big block and small block when replacing this part.

    William----

The JG is correct regarding the part numbers for the 1973 idle control solenoids. The 350 cid applications originally used the 1997409 and the 454 used the 1997417. Just how these differ I do not know. However, I really doubt that there is much, if any, external configuration difference except for the part number. I've forgotten if these have an embossed part number or a printed one. For the period, it was likely embossed, though.

The 1997409 was discontinued in July, 1982 and replaced by GM #1997470. The latter part was replaced by GM #17111376 in March, 1988. This was discontinued recently and I don't know if there is a new number, or not.

The GM #1997417 was discontinued in April, 1982 and also replaced by the 1997470. So, the initial replacement for both the 1997409 and the 1997417 was the same. This strongly implies that there was not very much difference between the 1997409 and the 1997417. However, I'm sure they were not exactly the same. I'm also sure that's why the various Corvette parts vendors show no difference between the 350 and 454 applications since they are selling a replacement solenoid and the replacements are the same. I'd almost bet that any current aftermarket replacements as well as the 17111376 are manufactured by Standard Motor Products and otherwise available under their number ES-9.

Personally, I would expect that you could use a 1997409 on your car and it would work fine. However, that's not going to solve your judging point problem. I doubt that the 1997409 will score any better than the one you have on there now. Both are incorrect. However, if the configuration of the 1997409 is different than the one you have, you might do a little better with it. Like I mentioned, I expect that the configuration of the 1997409 and the 1997417 were the same. Of course, there's also the issue of whether the ORIGINAL 1997409 and the one you have were the same. Even of the same part number there may have been some configurational differences over the years of manufacture.

This may be a functional replacement, but I don't think it's an original 1997417. Note that at the bottom of the yellow tag with the part he has written "ES-8". This is Standard Auto Parts Corporation nomenclature, but I can't find any ES-8 shown in their current catalog. It may be an obsolete part number which included the solenoid + bracket. The ES-9 is the solenoid only.

Thanks, but it expired. Can't be original GM for that price anyway.

These guys are showing that they have an NOS one in stock. Price listed is $195. They may or may not have it. Good luck

Joe, this is good information. I agree there couldn't be that much of a difference between the 1997409 and 1997417 if they were both replaced by a single part #.

                      Bill,

I have what I believe is an original but inoperable 417 somewhere in my stash of never throw it away parts. It will take me a day or two to get at it. This was removed from my '73 L48 some years ago after it failed electrically.

In the interim and going from memory, I see no physical differences between your 409 and the 417 I have. I also remember buying a service replacement 417 and noting that the electrical connector was at 90* to the body vs. the parallel orientation as seen on the originals.

In looking through the pictures I have of '73 LS4's, most have the 90 degree orientation for the electrical connector. Maybe that's the way to spot a service replacement.

Yes, GM #1114421 is the part number for the original carb solenoid used for 1968 Corvettes equipped with carb solenoids (not all were). The one in the photo looks like an original configuration unit but I can't say that it's correct in every nuance of detail.
