Windsheild Washer Pump - 74 Coupe

Anyone know about how to fix a 74 washer pump? Is it electrical or vacum? Also seat belt interlock system not working. Any help would be appreciated. I am scheduled for judging on Oct. 4

    Thanks,
    Tom

Hook a water tube from a two liter bottle to the inlet on the pump. Keep the bottle on the roof of the car and force the pump to work. Many times when you reconect to your washer tank they will work fine. Check all the plugs on the interlock system as lots of them were unhooked.

The pump is pure mechanical operating off a cam driven by the w/washer motor. Most times they need to be primed as described by Lyle or the check valves in the pump head are leaking. Not difficult to diagnose or fix.

For interlock system, make sure that the manual override also functions as this is essential for the ops portion.

I have fixed the windshield washer pump in both my son's and my 74'. In both cases the fix involved replacing the rubber seals in the pump head. To access just remove the 4 screws in the head near where the hoses attach. The seals will look fine but I think they get brittle with age and will not seat. I was able to get a set of new rubber seals (already installed in the white plastic holder) at my local NAPA store. If you have the parts it is a 10 minute fix.
I have never tried to fix the seat belt interlock system which is unique to 74' but agree the first thing to do is to see if the sensors in the seats have been disconnected from their harnesses. Most people in 74' disconnected the sensors (which disables the system). I suspect that is probably why this government mandated system (as I recall) was discontinued by the end of that model year.
