accelerator linkage

Hello Everyone,

I am toying with my car purely for my own enjoyment. I am creating the look of a 1970 LT-1 from my stock 350/300 car. Part of that transformation involves swapping out the stock iron intake and Rochester carb for a correct 1970 aluminum high rise manifold, and the correct Holly #4555 double pump carb. My question is this, will the accelerator linkage, cable, bracket, etc. from the Q-Jet set up work with the Holly. If not, what do I need to buy/locate. I'm hoping I only need to swap out the bracket. Any help would be appreciated...Thanks, Jim

I can't answer your question about the accelerator linkage but the holley 4555 carburetor is probably a little big for a stock 300 HP engine. That QJet is not a bad carburetor with it's small primary bores.

Just my thoughts but your set up may end up running not as good as the stock manifold and Qjet..

Hi James,
I believe you'll find that the accelerator linkage is the same for your 300 hp engine and the LT-! engine.
Holley does make a spread-bore replacement for your Q-jet that is sized for the lower performance engine. It is double pump but single feed. It might give you close to the look you're after.
Do you realize the aluminum manifold will require a change to the LT-!/BB hood, too?

The 4555 isn't a double-pumper - it's a conventional Holley dual-inlet single-pump vacuum-secondary carb.

As far as the accelerator linkage goes, the only part that will need to be replaced is the cable bracket attached to the left, rear carb stud. These are available in reproduction. However, the accelerator cable system is the least of your problems.

As others have mentioned, you may very well need to change the hood to the 68-72 big block/LT-1 hood configuration. I cannot say for absolute certain that this needs to be done. I can tell you that an Edelbrock Performer 2101 manifold (which I THINK is CLOSE to the LT-1 manifold in height) and Rochester Q-Jet carb WILL fit under the standard 1968-72 hood. Whether, or not, the LT-1 manifold and Holley carburetor will fit under the standard hood, I can't say for sure.

Otherwise, I think your engine will be OK with the LT-1 Holley carb but I don't think it will run as well as with the Q-Jet. You could also obtain other square-bore Holley carbs with very similar configuration to the LT-1 carb that might be a better choice. Basically, any Holley carb with dual feed inlet, 2 metering blocks, and divorced choke will appear like the LT-1 carb.

The other problem here, though, is that, in my opinion, any Holley carb is a BIG PIA compared to a Q-Jet as far as street operation goes.

The only thing I can think of at the moment that I want less than 3 Holley carbs is a bad case of diarrhea. In my opinion, it's one of the most foolish things that Chevrolet ever did.

Hey folks.....Thanks for all the info. I found a great deal on an LT-1 hood last summer. I had it restored and painted to match my Daytona Yellow car. As far as the swap goes, I put most of it together this weekend....for better or worse, as I have too much invested in the 4555 carb, Winters aluminum high rise intake, etc. not to try it! I can always swap it back as I'll clean up and restore the original components. The hood closes fine by the way. I suspected I would need a different accelerator cable bracket, so I'll be looking for one of those. I'll tell you this, it sure looks good! By "the hood closes fine", do you mean the hood closes fine with the ORIGINAL hood or have you already installed the LT-1 hood and that's what you're referring to?

Yes sir, the LT-1 hood has no clearance problems with the high rise manifold, carb, and air cleaner assembly in place. Best Regards, Jim
