1971 LT-1 TI coil

Still messing with my TI ignition system. I understand it calls for a 272 coil. It has a 180 coil. I was told to measure the ohms across the +and -with the correct coil giving a reading of .4ohms. A coil for non TI ingition would read 1.4 ohms. Is this correct?
Does anyone know what a 180 coil is for?

Ted, I believe the 180 is a Pontiac application, the one i have measures in the TI range. How does yours measure? Patrick

The 180 coil measures at .4 ohms.

Ted, the primary resistance on the 180 I have is .42 ohms and the secondary resistance is 10,560. Patrick

Check the specifications section of your copy of the 1971 Chassis Service Manual. You'll find almost three pages of spec's for the various distributors used on the different Chevy passenger cars that year, but a very simple (THREE row) chart for ignition coils despite there having been different D-R PN's for SB, BB, Etc.

Bottom line, the three coil entries with their primary resistance values are:

(1) 6-Cyl, 1.1-1.65 ohms

(2) 8-Cyl (Non-TI), 1.77-2.05 ohms

(3) 8-Cyl (TI), 0.41-0.51 ohms
