clutch push rod seal and retainer

I'm rebuilding the clutch linkage on my 59 and noticed that there is a rod "seal" and "seal retainer" that attaches to the firewall. The paragon catalog has the seal retainer on the inside of the firewall and vertical, the Corvette Central Catalog has it on the engine side of the firewall and horizontal. Since there wasn't anything on my car to copy, which way is correct?

It appears from the AIM that the location changed from inside to outside between 1960 and 1962, inside looks correct from AIM section 6 sheet 7 (1960 aim reference)
