    66 Seat Back Finish

My 66 driver needs the backs of the seats refinished (painted). This is the plastic shell that goes on the back of the seat. The previous owner had painted them gloss black which is flaking off.

What should the finish be?...Gloss?. Flat? or what?

Checked my TM/JG, but it wasn't stated. I don't have the newest edition.

    Thanks

    Re: 66 Seat Back Finish

    Rich,
Don't know about 66's but my 65 has the original seat backs on it, plenty dinged up but I would say they are gloss black. I was looking for awhile at repros as I wanted them for non-corvette shows since I was losing alot due to the condition. Every one I looked at you could tell the originals from the repros right away, so I gave up the thought of replacing them. For all I know they might make them better now. Good luck

      Thanks Ed.

My buddy owns an aircraft paint shop, so I went at them today. Most of the gloss black paint came off when blasted with compressed air. The finish underneath was more of a satin (and very dinged up). I have no idea if these are original or not. The car will not be judged, so I'll probably do a finish that looks like what was under the paint.

How would you compare the seat backs finish with the glove box door insert finish?

        Re: 66 Seat Back Finish

        Rich,
If you have original seat backs why don't you see if you can remove all the paint off, since originals were not painted. But if you must paint SEM products have a process to follow. All paint companies have paint procedures for plastic parts, but my past experience SEM is the best for interior parts. Your SEM dealer has a color chart with alot of black shades for your choice.

          Thanks Michael

They are so beat up that painting is the only option. My airplane paint shop friend paints a lot of plastic parts because that's what is inside many small airplanes. I don't know what vendor he uses, but his results are good and they last.....so that's what I will most likely do.
