    Mid-year exhaust leaks

L79 Roadster. I have stopped the oil pan leaks, tranny leaks and water leaks, but I am having trouble stopping the exhaust leak at the through frame cross member joint. The one that has the tranny mount hanger as a pipe support. I tried regular clamps and guillotine camps, but can't seem to stop the leak at the point of the spits in the larger pipe . The pipes have been pushed in about as far as they can go . This has been a problem for the last forty years, and I would like it to go away.

Any suggestions will really be appreciated.

    Jack,

I think you can buy some exhaust pipe cement (sealant) and this may cure the leak..

Chevrolet used an exhaust paste as a sealer. A little number in the AIM will show it, but the part number will not do any good.

      Try this:

At Black Forest Industries we manufacture performance parts for your VW / Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Porsche, and Mini but we also provide maintenance repair parts as well. Keep your ride on the road, make it faster, or make it look better than it did on the showroom floor!

I am not necessarily suggesting a purchase from this supplier. Years ago I found some local to me, but I can't recall at the moment where that was. All that Google showed on a quick search of the first page that came up was this place, the UK and OZ. I know this stuff is available in the USA, but a little effort will have to go into finding it.

You can also use a "seal clamp". It is basically a stainless band that wraps the entire joint. they are used quite a bit on big diesel trucks and are a bit tough to find in smaller sizes. I have a source that I can connect you with if yiou need it. Have fun!!

Thanks, Napa has some exhaust sealer paste. I was thinking of this product, but also wanted to find out if there was some magic clamp to use. As you know by owning a corvette, you have to remove the exhaust pipes all the time to get at many areas that you just know you are going to have to get at if you drive your car, and I drive it a lot.

I like this idea. There still is the hanger. You need to clamp the pipe to the hanger support to keep the pipe from moving. I guess you could clamp it gently , since the clamp is only being used to support pipe.

My pipes are 2 1/2 " . Let me know if they are available in this size.

I don't know how much this or the NAPA product are like the stuff Chevrolet used, but I took my original system apart at about 50K and ten years without any issues. The sealer just crumbled and fell out.

Jack, they are availible in 2 1/2", I recently used one of that size on my car. I don't know where you are, but try a good exhaust shop locally they will be the best bet. If you have no luck I can give the number of my friend shop where I got mine, he keeps them in stock. I think it was about $10-15.

                  Thanks,

I am trying the heavy duty clamp and some paste first. If that does not work, I will get back to you.
