If cost and originality are not a concern the Tremec trasmissions offer the advantage of using a rear ratio like a 3.08, but still retaining great acceleration and highway cruising.

If you have patience, check around various sources--------------NOT EBAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-----------maybe Craiglist, you should be able to find one for $100-200.
DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT tell them it is for a Corvette!!!! ANYTHING for a Corvette is always 10 times the price.
Say it is for a late 50s-early 60s full size Chevy, such as a 62 Chevy Biscayne, Bel Air, Impala, etc.
Although, 3.08s are not quite as plentiful, and as cheap as they used to be, they are still out there for a good price.
Since gas prices have gone so high, and the economy has taken such a dip, more folks are searching for ways to improve on fuel economy, and a OD trannys and higher geared rears are more in demand than ever before.
But be patient, keep searching and a nice (NON-posi) will show up.
If, at a later date, you should desire to add a posi unit, here is how.

You might even be able to find one "down under". Aren't there any bone yards down there with 50's and 60's Chevrolets in their inventory? I always thought that Australia was one of the few countries that had pretty widespread use of "Detroit Iron" (although, possibly, assembled in Australia with right hand drive).

I got on the blower yesterday and rang several shops that do the Boyd Coddington slash Chip Foose stuff. The Aussies love 55 and 57 Chevs. Every 35 to 50 year old wants a Blown 57 ? They all had a pumpkin in stock somewhere but couldn't find them so I'm waiting for a few phone calls back. They cut and shorten the original housings and modify the center and install a 9'' diff. I found one only 15 miles from where I live and the guy wants $1100 for it so I told him he was dreaming. Yes I think patience is the virtue here. One will come along I just have to sniff out a lot more places. I still think your neck of the woods is the better spot to find one. Stewy
