    Location of VIN on frame

Can someone tell me exactly where to look for the VIN on a mid year frame (67)

    Thanks.

    Bob:

I believe you will find it on top of the driver's side frame rail inside the rear wheel opening area. On the flat surface. See my poor arrow for location !

thanks Tom. Is that the only place? Is it accessable with a mirror? (body on)

It is the only place I know of for sure. If you are lucky and the surface is in reasonably good condition, you can often read the numbers with a little mirror and flashlight.

There is also a spot just forward of the #3 body mount (just forward of the kickup area). Essentially right behind the door sill area on the frame.

Impossible to see with the body on the car though.

The one shown in the picture CAN be seen with a small mirror and a flashlight.

            Hi Bob,

The first VIN number I found stamped on my '66s frame was 6S107216 located just forward of the left #3 body mount. It was straight below the driver's door sill plate (aft end). If you've got a rear exhaust car like mine, you'll need to remove the rocker panel. Once removed, wash the dust and dirt from between the frame rail and body then use a small inspection mirror and flashlight. It's tight there, but not impossible. Would be if you have side exhaust, I think. I tried to find the VIN # above the left rear kickup as shown on an earlier post but never found it until I pulled the body a few years ago. It was not as bold as the one forward and the mechanic tried to stamp it over weld slag. Only 6S_07216 was stamped. Maybe that's why there's 2 separate stamps in my frame.

My '65s was easy to find. It was above the left aft kickup. Found it by running my finger along the rail till I felt the recess atop the frame made when the mechanic stamped the #s there. Hope this helps.

I found mine on my 1966 right about where Tom's arrow is located. The stamp was relatively faint, and a couple of the characters were a little tough to make out, but it was there. I used a small dental mirror and a flashlight to find it.

I found the VIN in the same spot as the arrow on my 67 and I was able to see it with some difficulty with a mirror. Wiping the area with a wet towel helped a lot...

I found my '67 frame VIN on top of the rail, next to the drivers seat. I could see it with the body on but it was tough to get to. So I mixed up some fiberglass resin and put it on a paint stirrer and gently laid it on top of the number and then pushed down hard until it set up. Now whenever I want to see or show the number it's right here!

Mike -- would be interested in knowing whether your '65 is early or late. My 014xx car had the rear VIN derivative stamping where the pink eraser is seen, above the upper shock mount and trailing arm bumper; my late-late car's stamping is where the orange handle lies (and where I believe it is located in '66 and '67)

I've heard of some fairly late '65s (still) with the forward location, and I'd like to nail the changeover down somewhat. This applies to any other '65 owners who are tuned in to this thread.

6362 has the "Pink" location. I have a picture of it in a previous discussion of this location, sorry I can't repost it due to system limitations here, but it was in 2008 if anyone needs to do a search on VIN Stamp
