    1967 J56 Corvettes

I just bought the 67 435 J56 Corvette conv. back from the wife of a friend of mine that died of cancer. I was wondering how many 67 J56 cars are still around. I had this car 15 years ago. It was no big deal then. I have the tank sticker. It is SN 5564 Maroon/Black,SE,hard top, radio. I believe the car came from Mich. If you have one I would like to hear from you. I talked to Jim Gessner & he has only found one in the last ten years. I would like to start a list of known J56 67 Corvettes that were not L88'S.I would like to write a article about this rare option. THANKS

    Re: 1967 J56 Corvettes

Ken, they say only 267 sets were delivered in 1967. I am sure the cost of $342.30, almost 10% of the car deterred buyers. It was a great set up for road racing, and was mandated with the L-88 option cars.

There was a 67 maroon / black 435 convertible in Oregon with J-56 in 2007 that sold. And Bob Patterson's old 67 maroon / black coupe sold the same year. It also had J-56. You may remember Bob owned and raced the Grand Sport # 004 coupe. His first Corvette he bought new, was the above mentioned 67 J-56 coupe that he auto crossed in Nor. Cal SCCA Salomn events back in the day.

Those are the only two production cars I have seen in the last 10 years with original J-56 Special HD Brakes.

Ken -- I realize you're asking for J56 cars still around, but I thought you'd like to know seven '67 cars that were originally shipped to Canadian dealers. Plus probably another 3 or 4, as I don't have the complete GM records of the 396 model year '67 Corvettes shipped to Canada.

      Coupe 03192, L71
      Conv 06926, Auto, L36
      Coupe 07856, Auto, L36
      Coupe 10893, L71
      Coupe 14724, L68
      Coupe 15346, Auto, L36
      Conv 17191, L71

Would be nice to know if any still exist, and especially if still in Canada .

A friend of mine bought the maroon 435 that Jim mentioned. It has been restored by Nabers motors. I was told that most of the J56s that were not L88s were put on 390/400hp cars

Ken --- thought I'd add a little info about one of the Canadian J56 cars, just to show how different someones' tastes were "back then".

Red/red vinyl coupe # 07856, probably delivered to a Quebec dealer, 3.36 posi, auto, 390hp, power steering, bolt-ons, redlines, but no radio, no tint, no power windows.

Also, there were probably 9 or 10 J56 cars delivered to Canada, which is about double the rate for J56 orders, globally, based on a total of 396 Corvettes shipped to dealers north of the 49th parallel.

I was going to mention a Marina blue 67 conv but It's probably the same car. The one I remember was once owned by Bob Zimmerman in Illinois?
White interior? Or was it blue. Can't remember.
It was unrestored and VERY nice/original when he had it.

My brother owned a '67 Marina blue convertible, black leather, 2 top (vinyl), 427/435, F41, J56 purchased new In Rockford, IL (at Bachrodt I assume). He sold it in about 1980. I'll see if we can dig up the VIN next time I'm in Rockford. It needed a complete restoration.

At 350.00 for J56 I wonder what the reasoning was to order such a expensive option compared to the base cost of the Corvette unless it was going to be raced. Maybe in Canada they thought the car would stop better in the snow/icy roads?LOL Please keep the responses coming. For the money I find it strange that non racing Corvettes were ordered with this option. THANKS

Bill; thats interesting! I bought my car, #20292 in 1980, late in the year, from an outfit then called "Corvette Country" in I believe South Carolina. The car came with a sbc (POS) installed, but also had the original stamped/date coded block at 60 over going with the car(I rebuilt it with jahns custom ordered 90 over pistons). the overall car also needed a total resto-cheap dealer paint job, open rear, wrong hood, BUT had original looking dog eared protectoplate and motor had correct front pad build date and 2 digit engine ID. Remember, this was 1980, what was corvette resto technology then, I'd say an equivalent aviation year would be-Dec, 1941.

                          Richard:

Could be the same car. The car was repainted white, and he had a 302 installed, but had the original engine. I remember the driver side frame mount for the differential crossmember had broken loose. Did your car need (or show signs of) repair in that area?

Bill; I wound up getting a good used BB HD 4:11 posi from a corvette parts dealer up in Long Island, N.Y. in Dec. of 1980 and having my local repair station in Virginia install it. No mention of crossmember damage was stated so either it was nicely repaired or mabey nobody knew what to look for-I wasn't a mid-years expert yet and they-the repair station, knew even less.

As a side note, according to the inflation calculator, that cost of $342.30 for J56 brakes in 1967, would equate to costing $2,211.98 today.
                              Pricey by most people's standards.
