For Jim Gessner ...Early style Center Fill Cap

    Jim

This picture shows the style of center fill cap used on 1956 Sebring car #6 which was the same cap used on the Nassau cars. The 57 Sebring cars with the right side filler neck..used the next design dome top style cap.

Notice the Sun tach on the short column.

Frank Burrell on left. Whos on the right? Max Goldman, a driver of #6 car wanted the Sun tach. He later owned(?) the #7 Sebring car and raced it at Cumberland, Elkhart Lake, Haven Hill Climb. Top finishing Corvette at first two races and record set at the hill climb. He had a Sun tach installed in that car also. 56 Corvette #1009, Engineering #6911.

"The 57 Sebring cars with the right side filler neck..used the next design dome top style cap."

The Work Order indicates that these were Jaguar caps.

John, Note that they appear to have white jump suits on.

Was this '56 quick fill cap manufactured by Halibrand?

        Thanks!

Maybe Jim or Joe knows, but I haven't looked for that in the 56 Race Program WO and I have to get ready for a friends 80 Birthday Party, so if they don't respond, I will look it up later.

Need your help on that one Art. It would make sense that Halibrand or some other California company made the part. The WO should tell us.

Halibrand I believe did make filler caps for oil and gas but I was told recently that these filler caps were made by a famous Midget car builder.

More research needs to be done for confirmation. Would not surprise me if the idea came from Jaguar since a D Jag was brought to Michigan by Bill Mitchell or Zora to review for the Corvette racing program.

The split window coupe and other styling and engineering ideas were developed on the heels of other exotic foreign cars...many of which were in the International Playground of the racing circuit. Nassau/Sebring and Lemans.

I just reviewed one of the main 1956 Stock Car Activity Work orders and it does NOT identify the source for the fuel filler caps.

As I recall the 1957 WO does indicate that the caps were to be ordered from Jaguar.

The secondary passages of Mr Trybulec's brain function better than most.
Try a 1-10-56 order for "...one (1) Racing Car Gas Cap, Quick Release
                    Snap-Lock type" from:

                    "Johnnie Pawls Racing Equipment
                    Crown Point, Indiana
                    Phone Merrillville 9-8355"

Now all we need is a copy of Johnnie Pawl's catalogue....should be easy...

Loren...Thanks...that was the guy I was thinking of but did not have it in hand when I posted. DB from Detroit told me the same thing...and yes I need one...as mine was removed back in 1958.

I suspect the Johnny Pawl version was used on the 56 Sebring cars and the Nassau cars..and the Jag/Monza dome type on the 57 Sebring and later cars...at least one would think so based on photographic evidence. However these could also have been made in the experimental shop.

                        You're the best!

PS..there is a major following for vintage Midget Car Racing.

There is more than photographic evidence and documentation that the 57 Sebring car caps were NOT made in the experimental shop.................

The Chevrolet Engineering BWO 17792-87 (Build Work Order) dated February 28, 1957 was issued to order (5) Jaguar gasoline tank caps, #C-9557, from the Momo Corp 33-49 55th Street, Woodside 77 N.Y.
It states that the reason was "To provide gasoline tank caps for Sebring Corvettes." It also says the the caps had already been received at CEC. This was a Confirming order, and the requester was R.H.Clift.
