    Intake/water pump fittings painted? 1966 427

During the engine painting process of a '66 427 any idea if the heater hose fittings on water pump and intake were in place?

The heater hose fittings were installed at St. Louis and were, thus, unpainted.

      Mike -

The heater hose fittings were installed at St. Louis, and were not painted. Any part that shows in the Assembly Manual with a part number callout was installed at St. Louis.

          Michael-----

I'm assuming that the valve covers you have on the engine now are not the ones you plan to install. Neither of those pictured are correct.

Also, you have to be careful about how many coats of paint you apply. The original paint was usually rather thin. If you apply too many coats of paint, the paint will appear "thick" and non-original. When you see the sand-cast texture of the cast iron surfaces start to "smooth out", you have too much paint. Then, you have to strip and start all over again. You don't want to have to do this.

Good eye Joe. Those are my "$5.00 swap meet valve cover specials". Those were on the engine when it went to the machine shop. Much like my "$5.00 swap meet special oil pan" were used to protect the engine to and from the machine shop. The correct pan is now on the engine soon to be joined by the correct covers. I'll need to remove the water pump heater hose nipple before spraying as well. Haven't decided if I'll have the exhaust manifolds on while spraying....may do those off the engine...haven't decided.

Question on the long water pump fitting. The infamous double notch. What is correct for 1966?

Another question on this same motor. Water pump bolts & stud. What was the correct position and purpose of the stud on a base 390 HP motor?

                  Ron,

The stud is for cars equipped with AIR smog stuff. Starting in 66 all big blocks had them.

                      Ron,

Honestly it could have the double notch, single or none. Everyonle likes to see the notch but I have seen it all 3 ways.

In scraping a bit of the non original orange off the fitting, I can see a slight single notch - interesting discussion for those guys trying to sell the double as THE only option...thanks.

                        In a similar vein,
I started some touch up and the orange was TOO red and too glossy compared to what is there now, even considering heat has changed it somewhat over the years.

what brand of engine orange is everyone using?

                          Richard,

I like VHT, but this has been discussed before so a check of the archives might be worth your while.
