    54 oil leak

Ok I cleaned up the lower part of the blueflame today to start looking for the oil leak. Ran engine a bit and it looks to me that its only the oil pan leaking real bad. With car just sitting front of oil pan starts dripping within minutes.I researched and the only oil pan gasket I can find is the old 4 piece. Can anyone tell me what I will run into to get this pan off. Front clearance looks a little tight. Will I have to jack engine or is it best to remove steering components. Thanks Ed

OK I removed oil pan. I had to remove steering components to gain access. My only question is there an other gasket made for this blueflame other than the 4 piece cork. I have the gasket from felpro just would like to know if there is a better choice. Thanks Ed

Ed, did you turn your steering wheel to the left before taking the thing apart, pan will usually fall right out. When I put my four piece in as your about to do make sure you prefit the cork on the underside where pan fits and make sure the cork touches itself all the way around, glue in let set, I believe I used a bead of the black high heat silicone on the pan itself, then put it in place exactly where it goes while working screws in and tighting. It don't leak. Brad.

An issue that can lead to pan leak(s) is the failure to 'true' the pan's mounting flange. Pans that have been over-tighted by prior owners can have deformed/bent mounting flanges that need to re-trued by tapping them out against a flat/hard back stop before installing fresh pan gaskets and re-attaching...

Thanks for info. I checked steering for clearence of pan but of course I only checked with steering turned to the right. I went ahead and removed radiator and support and third arm. Turns out there were other issues that will need atention so all is not lost. Pan is installed and will put the rest back together Monday. Thanks Ed
