    3877660 Thermostat Housing

I am in need a housing and am planning to head down to my local junkyard to try to find one before resorting to other sources.

    My questions are this:

    1. Where should the part number be for a 1967? Some seem to think flange, others say on the neck is ok too.

    2. Was this housing used on anything other than Chevrolet?

    3. Were these dated? I have a 3877660 with the part number on the neck, and a 2C or something similar just below it. I assume this to be a date but don't really know.

    Thanks!

    Joel -

I expect to see the part number on the flange on a '67, don't know what its other usages might have been. I'd lean more toward the "2C" being a mold number than a date.

GM #3877660 was also used on some Pontiacs as far back as the late 60's and continuing until I-don't-know-when.

The GM part drawing dated Sept. 68 says: "casting manufacturer ID, part number, GM trademark 3/16" x 3/8" location optional." No date code called out as John stated.

Thanks John, but to me this confused the issue a bit; does it imply that cast number on the flange is correct for pre Sept '68, or cast number on the neck is correct for any date?

              Joel,

I think all we can assume from the part drawing is that GM left it up to the supplier where to put the part number. It does specify any model year info. For a high volume part there may have been more than one supplier.

Joel - I've seen a copy of the GM drawing John Daly is referring to indicating the part number location is the manufacturer's choice.

You might also check the DB Archives as this topic has come up before.

Also, since you are going "junking," you'll get a chance to see what location was used and I think you'll find it to be both, either on the base flange or the neck.

                Pete

Here's some shots of the three "660s" I have; sorry, none with part # on flange.

Note the two with the webbed mating flange (to the manifold). The newer-looking one (3rd thumbnail) has a solid flange. Look closely and you'll see the numbers 1c under the black housing and 2c under the one above.

No number under the newer one (3rd pic), but the triangle is common to them all (blow up shown on pic #2). Something tells me that the triangle was common to the same supplier . All three have tabs with a hole for the return spring for the throttle linkage.
