    Changing exterior color

I am in the process of restoring my 67 Roadster, 350 hp, very original highly optioned car, and I am replacing only parts that are absolutely necessary. I do, however wish to change the exterior color from green to black, which I prefer (interior is black). Question is this: since this will be the only item that will not match on the trim tag, does this appreciably effect the resale value? This will be a show quality paint job.
    Thanks,
    Bob

If you want to sell this as a "correctly restored" Corvette then the color change will adversely affect the value... IMHO

On the other hand its your car and if you are going to be happier with a black car then go for it!!!

If you go to sell it, unless you sell to someone else who likes black you will take a real price hit. Even with a person that likes black, they might be better off buying a real black car, depends on what plans they have in store and the asking price.

most people who are looking at a car that knows the colors and sees its the wrong color wants to ask about 15K less for the car to correct the problem

It would be a big hit, Bob. I've found that Corvettes aren't like other special interest cars where you can make some changes and still get a good price. If the paint doesn't match the Trim Tag it immediately throws up a red flag as to whether or not this car is reborn. It definitley tells you that the car is not original as far as paint, and makes you wonder what else is different.

If I wanted a black '67 I would find one that I like and buy it. I would enjoy this one until then. JMHO.

Tough question to answer. Why? The resale market is made up of many segments: those who want 'factory' correct cars, those who simply want a clean/nice ride, those who want it 'souped up'... So, the answer to your question lies with who actually is the ultimate buyer and what their preferences/objectives are.

But, to stay within the circle of this forum, on the judging field you'll loose ALL originality/condition points associated with the items whose color you change from what's indicated on the trim tag. For many who 'chase' this/that 1-3 point item, that kind of sweeping deduction is pretty hard to swallow and costly to make right again...

I'd prefer a no excuses car. Meaning if at show someone comes up asks "Oh Org. Black on Black car?" Well actually was green now repainted. Somehow tends to leave the rest of the car suspect. If a numbers car try to stay in that vain. Will keep it's history and intergity intact. Besides I like Glen green, Goodwin and Fathom green cars. Green's on its way back in a lota circles. We've all seen enough red and black cars. But your ride. Maybe sell it search for that 900 code car.

I am going to play the Devil's Advocate here, in most ads where I see a color change has happened, the car started out as green if it was a '67. Its your car, if you are planning on keeping it for 20 years, and are not going to get it judged, paint it how you want it.

                  Bob,
I think you should paint the car to your liking but understand that you will take a financial hit if the color doesn't match the trim tag. When I bought my car, I didn't care for the color but it was a very solid car, not requiring a lot of work. The color grew on me and I now love the color.

Bob, IMO, unless you are planning on selling your car in the near future and hoping to get good value for it, I say, paint it the color you like best. It's your car, enjoy it. I agree with the one poster that said the Corvette society is a lot more fickle about eveything being original, right down to chalk marks and bolts. I changed the color on my Jag XK140 from Battleship Gray to Old English White just because I liked the color. However, having said that, color doesn't seem to be quite as important in the Jag society as long as it's an original color. If you do plan on repainting it though, do it right, and strip it clean and start over, nothing worse then taking a nice care like yours and seeing another color in hard to spray areas. I changed my 69 back to it's original color of tuxedo black from orange, but took it apart and stripped it clean. Not a fun job but in my situation, orange was not a color I liked much.

My profound "Thanks" to all who responded to my post. I bought this car because it was an honest, all original car and hadn't been messed with. It also came with a 30 year collection of NOS parts. I
want to honor the tradition and have decided, thanks to all of you, to repaint with the original color. I'm fortunate to have a very good bodyman and will share photos when complete.
                      Thanks again to everyone

Glad you stuck with the green. It was the most popular color for most years for a lot of cars not just Corvettes. I love the 67 matalic green paint. Out in the sun it's beautiful. I am sick of resale red. Since they only made 800 black 67 Corvettes you would have to pay big bucks for a real black one. I love my green/black 67 400 AIR coupe.
