Boy, am I glad I had a flat tire!

Was going to take my 67 out today, but it had a flat tire. Put the tire tool on a lug nut and took a deep breath to prepare for the effort. Those dam* nuts didn't have 30 lbs. of torque on them! Naturally I tightened the rest of the wheels, but I sure am glad I caught it.

What is the correct torque for standard wheels? I put 60 lbs. for now. Also, since I couldn't find the leak, I've got to take the tire to a shop. How do I get the trim ring off without damage?

I think you're very close on the torque. It may be 55-65 lbs but I don't remember. The spec is shown in the service manual.

Most specs I've seen say 75 or 80 ft-lbs. Wayne

If you have the four clip style an ice pick between the clip and the rim on each side of each clip one at a time will loosen them so they pry off easy.

The 1966 service manual shows 60 lbs. I don't think the 80 lb torque spec was used until veryl late 60's or into the early 70's. The 80 lb number could be enough to snap the studs on older cars.

The part number changed on the stud and the torque value was increased. Different (stronger) material.

Larry, as Lyle mentioned correctly, a pick will work.
Here's a photo of a tool that available at many auto parts stores, and/or the Corvette catalog parts houses. I've used tools similar to this sucessfully for over 35 years of driving Chevrolets with rally wheels. Ridge

I too have a tool just like Ridge's that I've used for many years. Works great.

Also, the '65 AIM shows 55-65 ft.lbs; same for the knock-off adapter to wheel disc studs.

I've always used 55; never a loose wheel.
