I arrived early at Bob McDormans and had my list of parts that were up for auction marked that I wanted to check out. I was one of the few looking at anything for a C-3. All my Carlisle vendor friends were their from all parts of the country. I had checked most of the parts and in one of the last lots I found a stack of YJ8 73 Corvette wheels. I only checked the top two of the stack at the time as I knew if I got to interested others might make my find cost me more.
During the auction when everyone was buying the parts off the T/V in another tent I went back and found all five to be YJ8 73 wheels before the biding started.
I was the high bidder and I think others thought the rims were just another set of 76-82 aluminum wheels. Thanks to the article Ed McComas wrote years ago I checked out my rims this AM. The four that were on the road are all dated in October 1972.The NOS never mounted rim has a date that is not readable. I have seen the set on Zora's 74 and one set in Alabama owned by a collector. I have over the years heard of two other sets but have not seen them in person.
I may bring the NOS rim with me to the regional next weekend if anyone would like to see the real deal as John would say. They didn't cost 10-22K that the knock offs or race wheels sold for but I plan to have fun with my find that I have looked for the last 15 years. Only four sets are listed in the black book as sold in 73 and all were recalled so no one knows how many are still around.
