    McDorman Auction-Halibrand Wheels

I got to the auction with my list of desired parts and started looking at the items I identified as possible good buys.
I walk into the large building where the parts were and after a few minutes I come across a set of 5 sort of dirty knockoff wheels. I start examining them and to my surprize they are original Halibrand kidney wheels 15 X 5 with knockoffs. The front wheel had the spindles and knockoffs on the wheels with wheel bearings in place. The rear wheels included the 2 axles with the knockoffs attached.
I thought I had to have them so I set a price of $10,000.00 which was crazy to me, but I just sold a car and had some cash.
To make a long story short, I never bid.
The bidding opened at $10,000.00 and quickly finished at $22,000.00 plus a buyers premiun of $2,200.00.
$24,200.00 for a set of 5 very rare wheels.
I think the price was fair but outside of my budget.
What a great piece of Corvette racing history and I was thrilled to see them.

    Bruce:
I just got home and was checking the results on Mecum's web site and I saw the price on those wheels. What did the C-2 side pipe covers go for, there are not listed yet??
Looks like many of the parts went cheap.

      Re: McDorman Auction-Halibrand Wheels

Sorry, but I kept track of most of the C1 parts and missed the sidepipe covers, I think there were 2 or 3 sets.
In my opinion most of the C1 parts went for high prices. A lot of the parts were not in the best condition.
Some of the low prices were probably due to the fact that Mecum started the Parts auction about 1 1/2 hours early. It sure got a lot of the people mad who arrived at the published time to find the auction about half over.
Personally I felt there was lots of razzle dazzle and it was sometimes difficult to figure out who was actually bidding. Internet bidding also added some doubt to what was going on.

I picked up a set of five original YJ8 73 aluminum wheels. Only four cars had thease rims installed at the factory. I may have been the only person who knew what they were.

Some people in the know were looking at them when I passed by the case they were in and I heard them say some may have been repo's or had some defect. The price bid reflects that also. Internet bidders did buy some parts and from what I could see usally paid more to get a higher bid in because of the time lag. The auction did not wait for on line bidding and that's the way it should be. They run through all the lots ahead of the listed times but it was not done till close to 6PM. Some people showed up at 4PM the listed time for parts only to find that 130 lots were already sold. We would have been loading in the dark if they waited and all the real buyers got their plenty early.

No bargains in neon either. The oddball signs I wanted went for twice or better of what i had set as my maximum bid. Oh, well, hopefully there will be another day

Thanks for the reply. I checked the final prices and they look cheap only assuming nos condition. I take it from the way you saw it the parts were not nos and rough condition. As someone else stated, the photos and descriptions on the Mecum site are poor. That makes the prices high for not good parts.. Glad I did not waste my time and go.

Their were some parts that were day one take offs I bought. Like a set of 1975 all matching dates original tires with trim rings and center caps.I saw a rusty old 74 exhaust I had never seen before because the pipes had a resinator welded in. I can't comment on C-1-2 parts but I had a C-1 guy with me that said lots of rare parts were their but the big boys bought them and will make money when they sell so the parts will cost more now but they are still for sale. Any corvette guy would have had a good time looking over this 50 year collection as it won't happen again at this location unless he has more stored away. I seen a box of big old rusty jacks that looked to me like they would lift a mack truck and when they went for 2K I knew I didn't know what I was looking at. About six dealers bought 90% of the parts the way I seen it.You may buy Corvette parts too soon but you never lose money if you keep them long enough.

According to a couple of employees, they got through about half the parts Bob has and ran out of time, so maybe there will be another auction next year.
