Yes, that's how it works. The long bolt inserts from the rear of the bracket, through the compressor body, and threads into the tapping on the front lug of the bracket.

You are absolutely correct. Previous owner stuck a 2 inch long bolt in the hole and I assumed it was the correct length.

3/8 16 bolt does not thread into the bracket, so I will try the metric bolt, when I find one.

        Gracias Amigo.

The original bolt was metric 10 X 1.5 X 115 mm OL with a thread length of 82 mm and metric 9.8 material grade. That bolt, GM #11503611, is GM-discontinued. However, if you can't otherwise find a suitable bolt, you could order GM #11516366 from a GM dealer. This bolt is metric 10 X 1.5 X 120 mm OL with a thread length of 30 mm and a 9.8 material grade. I think that 30 mm of thread length will be more than adequate and will work fine. In fact, it might even be more suitable for the application than the original bolt.

This may be a little late but the bolt in question is part number 11502685.

Where did you find that part number? The 1979 AIM specifies 11503611 (although they mistakenly left off the first "1"). In any event, GM #11502685 was never a SERVICE part number. If used, it would have been a PRODUCTION-only part.
