    C2 Brake calipers

I just pulled a leaking left rear caliper off my 65 to rebuild. The part number (casting number?) appears to be 5473803. It is a Delco Moraine housing.

Looked it up in the 65 judging manual and got a different part number.

    A few questions:

What is the caliper actually for?
    Is it service replacement?
Is the caliper part number judged?

    Thanks

    1) The 547XXXX series calipers were used form about 1973 to 1982 Corvettes. So, this is very likely an exchange caliper that someone previously installed on the car. The 547XXXX calipers are a second design caliper, so, assuming the other calipers on the car have also been replaced, you know the car has been converted from first design to second design calipers.

    2) There's no way to know what the exact origin was for the calipers on the car. Most likely, they were exchange, stainless steel sleeved rebuilt calipers for which the cores were originally installed on some 1973-82 Corvette. They may also have originally come through SERVICE channels. You'll be able to tell, though, if you disassemble the calipers. If they are stainless steel sleeved, then they were exchange calipers. If they are not stainless steel sleeved, then they were SERVICE caliper halves. Before the days of stainless steel sleeved calipers (about pre-1976), the only way to service a Corvette caliper that had bore problems was to replace the caliper half with a new caliper half obtained from GM or Delco.

    3) I don't know.
