The orange and violet/olive drab paint daubs on the spindles are less obvious...one paint color should be enough to identify the sides, so why was the orange paint needed for ID?

The orange daubs seen on spindles were applied at Chevrolet-Warren, after machining but prior to assembly of the hub/rotor/steering arm/bracket/caliper (it went to St. Louis as a complete corner assembly); the spindle by itself wasn't side-specific. The orange paint was most likely an inspection mark for machining or hardness.

Thanks for your input, John...it appears you may be our last connection to some of this history. That would make the violet and olive daubs on my spindles identification marks for the assemblies as Mike said.
