The orange daubs seen on spindles were applied at Chevrolet-Warren, after machining but prior to assembly of the hub/rotor/steering arm/bracket/caliper (it went to St. Louis as a complete corner assembly); the spindle by itself wasn't side-specific. The orange paint was most likely an inspection mark for machining or hardness.
