    Joe L. part # question

    Joe,

a customer of mine got this in a GM wharehouse buy out many years ago and was wondering it's specific application and if it was for an early vette if so he could rightly list it for sale. I tried to send you the picture through both a PM and the board e-mail and was unable to so had to post here. Thanks for your time.

Here you've come up with a truly ANCIENT part. This is not a Corvette part. In fact, it's not even for any GM passenger car, at all. It's application is 1936-52 3/4 and 1 ton Chevrolet and GMC trucks. The 5450598 part number goes WAY back---even further than I have references for. I would say that it dates to the mid 40's or, even, earlier---maybe the original part number from 1936! The 5453941 was an early 50's SERVICE replacement. There were likely intermediate supercessive part numbers during the 1936-1950 period but I have no record of them. These parts service a master cylinder with a 1-1/4" bore.

As a matter of fact, the hand-written 5453941 had to have been added to the box prior to October 1, 1953 because at that time the GM #5453941 was replaced by GM #5454317. On November 1, 1954 the 5454317 was replaced by GM #5454428. That part lasted a LONG time----it was discontinued without supercession in May, 1987.

      Joe,

thanks so much. So this is probably worth more as a piece of memorabilia as opposed to a part for someone.

Definitely. Besides, unless someone is repairing or restoring a 1936-52 3/4 or 1 ton truck (VERY unlikely), this part would be of no use. However, being so old and still sealed in its original box makes it a real conversation piece. They'll always be a temptation to open the box and see what's inside. I have several of these real old brake parts in sealed boxes like this. Some of them are even early C1 parts. However, I've never succumbed to the temptation of opening the box.
