    61 F.I. Rocker Arm Clearance

    Hi Guys,

I'm restoring a 61 315 H.P. F.I. 283 to original specs. I want to make sure of the Rocker Arm Clearance/Valve Lash? I know it should be adjusted after start up. Is there an initial clearance recommendation with the final to be done after start up?

    Thanks,
    Jack Alexander 35730

I believe the ST-12 says 0.008 and 0.016 and I go by what is in the book and set them cold. The difference between a hot and cold measurement in my opinion would not be more than a thou or so, and for most of us this is well within the margin for error setting these things with a feeler gauge would naturally incur.

Use the following link to download and print out the latest revision of the Hinckley/Williams valve adjustment procedure:

Set the valves, cold, to the recommended specifications using either of the two crank indexing procedures that are acceptable for the Duntov cam. If most of the valvetrain parts are used, there will be very little "run-in change" and no need to check them until the next normal service interval. If most parts are new, recheck after 1000-2000 miles.

Then check and adjust as required to the recommended specs every 12,000 miles, which is GM's recommended normal service interval for road use.

        Thanks guys,

I should have said it is the 097 cam which I think is the same as the Dontov. Everything is new. Just to be anal what are the recommended intake and the exhaust @at "cold" and and the settings @ "hot"?

        Thanks,
