    Help finding steel wheels, 63

    Hi,
I'm looking for a set of ( very good condition) 63' steel wheels. Any help finding these would be greatly appreciated. I'm also looking for a jack.
    Thanks, John

If the Driveline fails you might try eBay or Craigslist. Too bad Carlisle is over, that was where I scored two '66 steel wheels.

Jacks and wheels pop up occasionally online. Be sure you know exactly what you are looking for as the wheels and the jack are unusual and unique items.

Many jacks look the same. Do a search on the type 1 jack. That is what you need.

Tracy Krisler has posted some good 63 wheels photos too. I bought my spare from him.

Here is my type 1 jack.

              David --- do you mean the "8080" ie. #3838080, [15 x 5.5K] which shows in my 1970 P&A30B as service for '57 to '64.

My oldest chassis parts book (Rev. July 1-65 P&A30) calls the wheel for '63-4 (exc. knock off) as 3839814. I can't say whether this was the service number actually used in 1963 or 1964 catalogs (the steel wheel itself was never a separate item in the AIM's), or that used in production. I believe '64 was slightly different than '63; I don't know whether that merited a part # change.

The "814" was replaced with the "8080" by 5-66, according to parts history in the '67 P&A30.

Can anyone describe the characteristics of the "8080" versus factory production ? (inboard slope, markings, etc) ?

                John,
I would suggest eBay. There is a set of 5 listed now (and have been for a long time) with a Buy It Now price of $2750 (if memory serves) - there is no bidding on this set, if you want 'em you pay the B.I.N. price. They are listed by Piper's Corvettes. A set of four was recently listed on eBay and sold on 9/3/09 for $2700. These wheels all had matching dates of 5/63. If you are not a stickler for the wheels having date stamps appropriate for the build date of your car your search will be easier. I am also looking for wheels for my '63 - I need two more to make a set of five. Good hunting.

There is no way I would pay more than 175-200 for any wheel. I must have been sleeping, did these wheels just jump in price??

When I located mine I recall having them at my house for 75/ea. shipping, everything..

                    Tim,
The '63-'64 wheels have become very pricey if being offered by sellers who know what they have and have some knowledge of asking and selling prices by others. If you can find a seller who is not knowledgable or does not care to make enough from the sale to send his kids through college you can find them priced more cheaply - but this kind of seller is hard to find. I found one for $200 and was happy as a clam - the seller said he had previously sold more and knew what he had but he just wanted to move them out and make a few bucks. He advertised only on C. List and refused to ship.

Bought my last one on ebay for Buy It Now price of $200 about 9 months ago. The ad had just been posted about 4 hrs earlier, and I suppose no one had seen it yet.

Since I have two '63's, buying my 10th and last wheel was a bit of a milestone.

Wow!! I thought we were in recession.. You don't happen to have the ebay completed listing # so I can look at these gold plated wheels..

What are the 65-66 wheels bringing these days? I need to find one more 63 wheel and two 65-66 wheels.

Wayne, you are correct, Group 5.803, #3838080. I just looked at my stack of receipts and found where I paid $45 each for five of them from Schmitt Chevrolet on 19 Nov 1986. One has never been mounted, others are on my 60 brake car because I can't afford the real thing or the repros at $1,000 each. I'm just finishing the dishes, will go to the garage and photograph the wheel this afternoon and post the photos.

                            Wayne,

This pic shows the difference between a 8080 wheels (top) and real 63/4 wheels (bottom). The face side of both wheels are identical in appearance, but the back side is very different indeed.

I thought it might be of some value to some of you to see the stamping on the inside surface of the wheel too. Keep in mind that all date stamps will not appear this clear, deep, and straight. Two of the other wheels from this same car have date stamps that are BARELY visible.
