Prepping my '66 427 for paint

Get ready to paint my '66 427 after getting it back from the machine shop. I know the exhaust manifolds, intake (L-36) and water pump were in place when painted...how about the:
    • motor mounts
    • starter
    • fuel pump
Wasn't the by-pass hose from intake to water pump somewhat covered when engine was painted?

Mike: Try the search feature. There has to be tons of comments about this subject, right here on this discussion board.

Imagine you were spray painting engines in the factory, you are tired and don't love your job... and the little hose in the front was already there. I would say sometimes the hose got a lot, and sometimes the hose got a little (over-spray).

A few things were even removed, then replaced with unpainted stuff in St. Louis. (in 67 at least...)

The motor mounts, starter, and fuel pump where not on the engine for paint. The top side of the bypass hose should have orange overspray.

The bypass hose on a 65-67 big block was covered with a somewhat poor fitting mask. The ends of the hose and at least a part of the clamps would show orange paint. (big block only. small block bypass hoses were not masked/shielded)

A wide piece of tape was placed over the opening for the fuel pump and a small section of the block around the opening will also be masked. The tape was about an inch wider and a few inches longer than the fuel pump mounting surface.

The water outlet (thermo housing) on the intake manifold and the large coolant inlet on the water pump were masked, often times covering more of the inlet/outlet than the hose covered when it was installed.

The starter mounting surface on the bottom of the block was bare, unpainted. I don't remember how this surface was masked or shielded.

The clutch housing was in place during the paint operation but it wasn't painted completely. Most were only painted on the forward half with some light mist overspray possible further to the rear.

The engine in it's "as shipped" configuration from the Tonawanda plant would be painted orange. Parts added at the St Louis plant, as shown in the assembly manual, would not be orange.
