    GM part number

    Does anyone know of a web site I can go to and put in a old part number and it will tell me what the part fits? I just bought a 69 coupe with tons of NOS parts still in the wrappers. Most parts are corvette but there are a lot that are for some other cars. I just want to see what I have! Thanks!

      Joe Lucia does not have a web site that I know of. He is one that comes to mind that would be able to help with part numbers.

        You are searching for something that I think you'll find as elusive as Juan Ponce DeLeon's search for the "Fountain of Youth". I may be able to help with some of the part numbers, providing that:

        1) they are CHEVROLET part numbers and;

        2) there are not too many of them. Your quantification using the term "tons" concerns me in this regard.

        Also, I GREATLY prefer doing this on this board rather than via e-mail. In this manner, any ID I am able to provide might be of use to someone else, now or in the future (through the archives).

          This will work only if the parts are currently available from GM. However, it will not provide any application information for a part.

            Thanks Joe. I think I have to many parts to bug you with looking them up. I know what all the corvette stuff is but the non corvette stuff is where I need help. I'll do a search one part at a time and see if I can find out what I have. Thanks for your help. Jeff

              Another "old school" method would be to find one of the parts catalog style books that were available in the past. These may be available at parts flea markets or ebay. I doubt that new editions are being published, but I haven't looked for them in a long time.

              I have a volume published by "Motorbooks International" titled Corvette Parts Book 1953-1972. Later editions extended the model year coverage as additional MY became collectable. These books are essentially reprints of GM parts catalogs from the past that are edited and redacted to limit coverage solely to Corvettes. Part numbers, and their page location, are listed in an appendix...find the part number in the appendix, go to the page number, the listing tells you the application. A caveat is that these are SERVICE REPLACEMENT part numbers, and therefore you are only likely to find an ORIGINAL part number in these books if the book was published soon after the MY Corvette of interest was built; e.g. for restoration of a 70' Corvette, the 1953-1972 parts range worked very well. Some part numbers used in production were NEVER available as service parts, and therefore these part numbers will not show up in parts catalog books, only in the AIM.

              Another option, assuming you can identify the intended purpose of the part, is to find the applicable section of the AIM that covers that part and it's function. The AIM page will have a listing of the production part numbers originally used. If the part number on your box matches the part number on the AIM page, you have truly struck gold...it's an original part (maybe). If it doesn't match the AIM page listing (highly likely depending on when the part was purchased), that may simply mean that the part is a functional service replacement purchased later. Adding to this confusion is the fact that service replacement part numbers sometimes changed when parts were superceded, but not always. Because a part number IS listed in the AIM does not necessarily mean it has the same configuration as the original part.

              Later service replacement parts may or may not fare well in judging, but they may FIT a lot better than an equivalent reproduction that has appearance closer to the original part.

                Jeff -- I have the '65 thru '70 parts books pretty well covered (also '62 thru '64 on the body parts only) for Chevrolet passenger, Corvette and light trucks [no Chevelle, Chevy II, Corvair, Camaro]. But the key is giving as much info as is on the part sticker. The group number is critical (otherwise it's the needle in the haystack). Also, if it's a Delco part, the D-number.

                Example: Gr 2.384 GM# 1966289, D-106PS is a set of ignition points.

                PM me a list of about a dozen that include at least the group and GM# and I'll see what I can do for you.

                  Jeff,

                  I also have the Chevrolet P&A 30B Corvette parts book 53 thru 71 year. I can also look up your '71 parts.
