    powerbooster removal c3

    Can anyone give me a clue how to remove the power booster? I can't even see or reach the top l/h nut. Thanks,Graeme.

    In order to remove the booster you will not only have to see/reach that nut but you will have to remove it and put it back on. If you remove the driver's seat and anything else you can from under the dash the job will be a bit easier (like going from diamond hard to only granite hard). Unfortunately there is no other way.

      One can lower the steering column and remove the left side dash pad for better access. But, that's a big job in itself. It does also give one the opportunity to replace all the dash light bulbs, though. Also, to remove the clutch pedal and replace the nylon shaft bushings and the pedal pushrod clevis pin (almost guaranteed to be worn).

      In any event, power brake booster removal and installation is one of the jobs on a Corvette to be FEARED. As a matter of fact, years ago I thanked my lucky stars that I didn't originally order power brakes and discarded the notion of ever adding power brakes to my 1969 for 2 reasons:

      1) THE HASSLE OF REMOVING AND INSTALLING THE POWER BRAKE BOOSTER;

      2) The fact that there's really not very much difference in braking performance between a power brake-equipped and non power brake equipped Corvette.

        I did this a few weeks ago on my 69 and after I got into it, I found it not that bad. I removed the seat so that I could lay in the floor on my back in various orientations so as to be able to reach and leverage. But I could see and access all nuts. The only thing I removed from under dash was the ac duct. I used a 3/8s rachet, a 12 inch extension, a u-joint and deep socket. I wrapped some tape around the u-joint to stiffen it a bit. I had more difficulty putting the keeper back on the brake pedal pin than removing the booster until I figured out the secret. The keeper could be spread on the tip of a medium common screwdriver and carefully worked over the end of the pin, then slide the screwdriver out and the keeper collapses onto the pin - pretty slick. Patience is the key. If you can't see/reach in one position, shift your body position until you find the sweet spot. I guess if you have bad back tho, pay somebody else to do it. My brother was watching me this whole time and said something like "that hurts just watching you."

          Thanks for the replies. So it is as hard as thought. At least Phil has given me hope. Now I'm thinking , is it worth it just to repaint it ??? Again thanks,Graeme.

            If you are removing it just for a repaint, I would say a BIG NO. I would carefully mask things off, cover other engine compartment items, and paint the booster "in situ". Yes, you might not end up with an absolutely perfect restoration, but I think you'll thank yourself in the end.

            Save the complete and perfect restoration for when the booster needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

              Graeme I removed my power brake booster on my 1970 to paint it because the master cylinder leaked brake fluid onto the booster and needed painting to protect the metal casing.
              I keep an old large bed pillow for under the dash work and lay it across the door sill on on the floor. Did not remove the seat, although that is easy enough for those that need to. Only had to remove air conditioning duct.
              The booster would be a lot easier to remove if the four retaining nuts were not a frition fit throughout removal.
              When I got tired of wrenching I would stop and take a break.
              Installation would be easier if one would replace the nuts with non friction type nuts. Once tightened they would retain the booster.
