    C2 Rack and Pinion

I know some (most?) won't want to see this posting, but I need some expert opinions. I have a '66 roadster that I bought 9 yrs ago as a driver. It was in very good condition, but didn't have any of the original drivetrain (engine, trans, rear end). Even though I've made changes to make it a better driver, including a Tremec 5 speed trans, I've been very careful not to do anything that required cutting, drilling or welding, so everything I've done is easily reversible. I now want to add a rack and pinion setup and have found 2 potential kits. They are from Steeroids and Rack-Attack and both clain no cutting, drilling or welding required for installation. I'd like to know if anyone has installed either of these and 1) how the installation went and 2) how happy are you with the end result.

Mark, I would discourage changing the steering box to a rack and pinion. The quick and tight steering of a mid year may be difficult to duplicate with an aftermarket rack. If you want faster steering just move the outer tie rods to the inner hole..........

A properly built saginaw box along with good suspension and alignment will hold the road very well. I do a lot of boxes, some that were previously rebuilt by someone and were wrong, all are sloppy when they come in, all are correct when done.

Your car, your call- but the feedback I've got on aftermarkets kits was mixed, some love them others hate them.

      Good luck

Mark, looked at the rack and pinion options. Decided to stick with the standard steering box. If I make any more changes to my '64 driver will convert to a front mono spring. Several of our Chapter members have done so and they drive way much better. Gary....

Mark, you are a brave fellow to ask NCRS members about a modification from stock! Perhaps you may find more help on the Corvette forum. Here is the link: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/

Once you get to the "home page", just scroll down to "C-1 & C-2". I would be surprised if you didn't find numerous posters willing to help in your decision. -Clark

Mark, I have done several rack and pinion conversions in the last 3 years. I have used the Vette Brakes product because they offer it with Power assist. Installation is a bolt in application but I must say there are several universal joints to get from the column to the rack and you will spend several hours getting them aligned perfect. Once this is done you will be happy with the results.

Sorry it took so long to respond back. I do appreciate all the comments and recommendations. I will thouroughly investigate all options, however the one firm requirement I have with everything I do with this car is there will be no cutting, drilling or welding so it can easily be converted back to original. Thanks again for all the help.
