    67 BB Crank Pulley # 3863108 Finish

Can someone please advise what would be the correct "refinish" color for the 3863108 Nodular Iron Crank Pulley. Would a gentle glass bead finish and natural be correct or what color detail paint is most suitable.

    Thanks

The many examples of these I've looked at have been painted semi-flat black, almost a flat black.

Thanks for your reply. I'm still a little confused as to the finish as I also have seen flat black on this part however the Judging Manual states it is to be a natural iron finish. I don't want to paint this and then get points dinged when it should be natural

Pic is the one off my late 396. I'd say it's a black oxide (natural ?). certainly none of the car's previous owners were "into" painting pulleys

I think your right. It does appear to be darker than it would if these were unplated.

This is exactly the finish I've seen on these. I'd say it's definitely not a natural cast iron finish. Although natural cast iron finish does vary, there's no way that natural cast iron would have survived this long virtually rust-free, especially on a driven car.

It does not look like black oxide or black phosphate to me. Cast iron parts were rarely, if ever, finished with either of these two, anyway. To me, it looks like a thin coat of black paint, whether or not that's what it actually is. The bolt seat area looks like the paint was abraded off. I don't think that black oxide or black phosphate would have reacted like this.

However, I would not rule out that the finish is black oxide or black phosphate; it may very well be one of these.

                Joe,

Here's the story: The part drawing states the following (added in 1964):

Protective finish: Phosphate Grade 24. To be finished with Parkolac 30 or equivalent.

I'm not sure what that is but i don't believe it's paint.

                hope this helps.

That's very helpful. I'd almost bet that "Parkolac" is related to "Parkerizing". Parkerizing is a form of black phosphate finishing, so that's also consistent with the "Phosphate Grade 24" from the spec.

If one could obtain the chemicals and technique involved, one might be able to restore the original finish on one of these pullies. Although Parkerizing was used for some automotive applications, I believe its primary application was for use in firearms. So, maybe a gunsmith could supply the chemicals or tell one where to get them.

Search the discussion board for "Parkerizing". I believe it was talked about and a supplier was mentioned.

Thanks John. Years ago, I used a product called 40/40 gun blue on several misc parts. It came in a small bottle and when applied to a part, the surface/color looked exactly like the pulley in Wayne's picture.

Thanks to everyones replies. I will go with the Black Phos Eastwood paint as it will be the closest. The flat black looks too much like paint
