    NCRS, NCM, and my Typhoon.

My other hobby-car is GMC Syclone and Typhoon. If you don't know what they are, Google is your friend, or there is a pic below.

3 weeks ago, I attended the SyTy Nationals. I drove mine there from Los Angeles. We held them in Bowling Green, KY. About 200 people, and 61-1/2 SyTys attended. This location was chosen for its geographical location to the majority of owners, and for the excellent drag-strip facility that is close by. SyTy owners like to run on the track. Many SyTys are heavily modified. The "Track Day" is the main event at the SyTy Nats.

NCM: The organizers had us caravan to the NCM as a group for the afternoon on the first day. It was the Welcome Reception, as well as a Technical Seminar. We brought a few trucks of interest into the 'meeting room' adjacent to the Museum lobby. Mine is the red one in the pics below. As part of this activity, we were given exclusive access to the museum self-guided tour.

I knew the NCM was finishing a major renovation, and was interested to see what exposure NCRS was given in the new layout. After really looking hard, and spending a couple of hours on the tour, the only representation / reference to NCRS I found was one decal in a blue 68 on display. That's it. One 1X3 inch decal, on one car!

Anyway it was cool. Not sure I'll go again. The NCM's focus has obviously changed to being a delivery point for new Corvettes, and the R8C program. The hobby and historical aspects of Corvette are afterthoughts to the current NCM management. It seems NCRS has been thrown under the bus.

I'm sure my Corvette will never be displayed in the NCM. But my Typhoon has. That's my story, experience, and opinion of the NCM.

I had a '93 Typhoon a few years back, same color scheme as yours. One of the few past cars that I really miss. What a great little truck.

Can't comment on the NCRS status at NCM, as I haven't been there recently, but I have to ask. Of the "61 1/2" SyTys in attendance, what was the 1/2?

      Dave,
When I was at the NCM mid-June, there was a small unfinished area of the expansion project. I do not recall the approximate number of sq. ft. of this area. However, it was my understanding, perhaps unfounded, that a portion of this area was to include, among other exhibits, space for the NCRS.

Perhaps someone with more accurate information than I have can comment.

      Best regards,

The NCRS will BE well represented in the new expansion. There will be the NCRS Archives and Library area when done.

The NCRS archives, now housed at the AACA Library in Hershey PA, will be moved to NCM late this fall. The only holdup on the move is ME getting in gear and getting it done. We have more that adequate volunteers lined up to do it. We made the decision to wait until the NCM recovered from Labor Day and the AACA got their largest event of the year behind them.

Don't worry about future recognition, NCRS will always be remembered as the organization that brought forth the idea of a museum. The NCRS BOD recognizes the importance of the museum.

          Should be self-explanatory now. Sorry.

NCM is still working on the expansion and has not completed the NCRS display per John Pirkle the NCRS NCM representative. Pirkle said the NCM goal is to have the NCRS permanent display finished this week and hopefully they will. The NCM has a full plate getting ready for the anniversary celebration next weekend. On Friday Sept 4th at 2PM the NCRS Library and Archives will be formally dedicated with a plaque recognizing NCRS. Hope this info helps. Your trip to the NCM was prior to their total completion of the expansion. Gary....

I posted my observances here as a report on the current status of the recognition that NCRS is currently receiving at the museum itself as of my visit on August 7th. As an NCRS Member, I was unimpressed with the recognition.

It really looks like they are much more interested in R8C, and the $500 Owner Photo books.....

Because NCRS members were the prime movers in the initial startup of the NCM, I would think that any new NCRS space, albeit, a small percentage of its original space, should have been the first section of the expansion project to be completed, rather than the last.
We all remember the disappointment felt, although not expressed by the BOD when the new plans for NCM floor space were finalized.

I visited the NCM on August 6th. There were still a few areas that they are working to complete. The Library and Archives is one of them. I did check out the Library and was greeted by a very enthusiastic Betty Hardison . Betty told me they were still working to complete the Library and gave me a tour of the area where the NCRS archives will be stored.I was wearing a NCRS shirt at the time.

                  Gary,
If it wasn't for this post I wouldn't have known about the Library dedication at 2PM. There is NOTHING about it on the NCM event agenda. It is probably the best kept secret around.

I see a 3:30 Museum rededication, but if I went to that, I would be late for the Library show.

maybe if all 15,000 members of NCRS joined the NCM there would be more recognition. membership dues is one thing that keeps the NCM afloat along with raffles and the new corvette deliveries.

Terry, thanks for heads up. Assumed it was on the agenda. There sure is nothing about the NCRS plaque and Library/Archives dedication. Will check with Pirkle to make sure I understood him correctly and start a separate thread. Best, Gary....
