    Glove box tumbler

Aftermarket glove box tumbler and retainer from well known corvette supply house in Northeast USA. I have tried every which way to install the glove box tumbler in the retainer housing with no success. I can't get the tumbler plates to clear the bezel of the retainer to save my life! Any help appreciated. Thanks, Brawley

Do you have the key in the tumbler and turn it? Bill

      Bill,
The lock cylinder (tumbler assy) is out of the retainer housing; I can insert key and all it does is displace the rectangular tumbler plates to the other side of the lock cylinder. Brawley

Brawley, I have never done this, so I guess it not me you want. What happens if you press the button?

          Bill,
The button on the lock cyl is only functional (depressible) when it is in the retainer and engaging the catch at the rear of the retainer, and I haven't been able to get that far yet! I appreciate your trying to help me out-have a good weekend. Brawley

Man I was sure you would have had an answer by now. Guess it's time to call the vendor. Bill.

              Brawley,

I just did this with a tumbler from the same supplier. As you insert the tumbler take a pick or thin blade screwdriver and depress each tab as it contacts the bezel. Let me know if that works for you.

                Glove box tumbler; What year?

                Brawley,

What year are you talking about? For mid-years, the glove box lock cylinder cannot be inserted into the lock case if the key is inserted. The key needs to be removed.

Gary -- doesn't the pin inserted into one of the holes have something to do with it ? This is an NOS case for '63-5, per GM parts books. Unfortunately there's no instructions in the shop manuals specifically for the glove box.

                    Glove box lock cylinder removal

                    Wayne,

There are two small rectangular tumbler access windows on most glove box lock cases. I've see some cases with only one windown, in which case the core can only be removed with the lock in one position, either locked or unlocked, I can't remember which. But on cases with two windows, one inserts a bent paper clip into the window where one can see the ends of the tumblers and one pushes down on the wafers in order to clear the lip of the case. There are 5 wafers, but only 4 are matched to the key. The 5th wafer, which is the outermost one, cannot be pushed down to clear the case unless the key is not inserted. Once that 5th wafer is depressed, then it's easy to sequentially push on the other 4 wafers to remove the lock core.

So, the upshot is, one cannot remove the glove box lock core the way one does the ignition lock or the spare tire lock. With the key inserted into the glove box lock, it's impossible to remove the core.

                    Gary
