My '56 is home from extensive body work and the body has been removed from its chassis after 53 years being there. I am trying to get the body ready for painting and the last item to be removed from under the dash is the emergency brake handle and cable. Everything is removed from the dash with only the small cable coming through. The cable goes thru the dash into what appears to be a couple of sections of pipe going into the handle assembly. I am sure the cable has some sort of ball attached to the end of it. If I remove these sections of pipe can I get to it? I have heard that removing and installing this cable is a real pain. Can anyone tell me what I am up against. I read previous posts on this subject but still don't quite know how to remove the emergency brake cable. Thanks in advance!

Re: '56 Emergency Brake Cable Removal
Roy, I just came from the shop and what you said worked perfectly. As soon as I turned the emergency brake handle, there it was--the ball at the end of the cable. I used a small screwdriver to remove it from the handle assembly which enabled the cable to pass thru the firewall leaving the handle behind. I guess it is all in knowing how. Thanks for sharing your expertise! Brooks Glover (2141)- Top

Re: '56 Emergency Brake Cable Removal
Ed, I definitely think that a picture is worth a thousand words. I have tried to take pictures of the emergency brake handle and cable assembly. The picture showing the cable with the ball on the end did not come out too well. The other pictures show the area where it comes through the firewall and the handle assembly. There is a nut on the firewall side that screws onto a threaded piece on the inside that is a tube going into the handle. As Roy Braatz said in a previous post--the cable goes through all of this and to get it out you just turn the handle till you can see the ball on the end of it. It is held in place by a slot in the handle assembly. It is easily removed with a small screw driver. It also easily re-installed using the same slot to hold the ball and cable in place. Thanks again to Roy for clearing up the muddy water. Brooks Glover (2141)- Top
