    Re: Cash For Clunkers

Well, on the really bright side.....this whole program pointed out to me how much I really love my old '62 Corvette.
I didn't trade it in......and I'm still sanding (it looked like a rather small car when I started).
Just to feed my weird sense of humor, I stopped by a dealer in my really old Ford Escort to see about trading it in.......when I told him it gets 40mpg he stopped in his tracks and then just started laughing.
When he asked why trade, I told him it didn't have cup holders or air bags.
Reinforcing his estimate of dotty (nearly) old women.
So this all can be fun......
    Cheers, Sandy

The farce continues! Computer crashed again today, deadline extended to 8 PM tonight. There are dealers that have not been able to access this joke for over 24 hours!

I usually stay out of political conversations, BUT THIS HAS TO BE THE MOST ILCONCEIVED FARCE OF THE 21st century.

Boys and girls, remember we elected these idiots, both parties.

So what will happen in the months to come when car sales tank?
Is this the warm, fuzzy crumb thrown to the masses to appease them for the billions spent to bail just about everyone else out of mismanaged messes?
Good for people that take advantage of the offer.......nothing wrong with that, but I don't quite get how this helps most people.
        Cheers (though mystified)

          Re: Cash For Clunkers

I stoped by a local Volvo dealership near my house yesterday to see the clunkers they had on thier lot and some of the cars are very nice. There were about 20 clunkers on their lot. A 4Runner that was in great shape, an Explorer that I'd drive with no problem. These should be used cars and for sale, not going to the crusher.
Take what I saw and multiply it by thousands and it's a real waste.

But even the Prius isn't really green. The nickel for the batteries is mined in Canada and smelted in Sudbury, Ontario, shipped to China to create the battery and then to Japan to be put into the cars, then the cars shipped back to the US. All that shipping and mining adds up to more energy use and emissions than is ultimately saved vs. gasoline over the life of the battery. The only advantage is the emissions are being spewed over Sudbury and across the oceans, not in U.S. metropolitan areas where the voting booths are.

As to the program, sure a few people traded in some cool cars like the vette in the video, but those unfortunate cars were already in the hands of idiots, probably otherwise doomed to be finished off by the family teenager or rot into oblivion under a rain of fallout from an old elm tree. At least it eases my conscience to think that the program didn't kill off any future classics that I could have rescued anyway.

Some people got the shaft. The customer and the dealer thought that the customers car quailifed as a clunker and made a deal. Then they found out that the MPG was raised by the EPA and had to cancel the deal.

I could use the three rubber shock absorbers from this clunker that fit into the large headlight gear in the headlights. Can't find these pieces from any vender I have checked with for my 85.

What's the point in destorying the engines. I mean if it's getting crushed then who cares if it's seized or not. If it's going to the wreckers then why vandilize a resaleable part?? I don't get it.....

                    ....

"The CARS Act specifies that while many parts of the trade-in vehicle
are permitted to be removed and sold, in the end the residual vehicle, including the engine block, must be crushed or shredded."

                      from the act:

Just from a quick Google search.

Given all the smoke coming out of that crankcase, it is a wonder that the EPA was not all over their case!

A Tuned Port C4 will do way better than 20mpg on the highway! My '87 loaf along at like 1400rpm at 75, alway got 26-27, sometimes 30!

The "pollution" from destroying all these engines is more than if you just would have let them run normally for another year. Youtube is filled with hundreds of videos of cars smoking, burning and starting on fire. Noxious fumes being let into the atmosphere uncontroled and unregulated! Guys laughing and running around with fire extinguishers, reminds me of my days in the College Dorm.

So now when someone wants a nice C4 engine to extend the life of their already produced vehicle, he'll have to pay more because the supply is now less.
Such a JOKE this program is!

Quite true, but the mileage-qualifying number for the program isn't the "highway" figure; it's based on the EPA "Combined" figure, which is generally only a mile or two per gallon more than the "city" number.
