Tire Tub and Antenna Mounting Hardware

I pulled my tire tub the other day to clean under it and check the general condition and noticed some mismatched bolts and some loose holes where the bolts attach the tub inside the carrier.

What are the correct bolts inside the carrier and what color are they? Also, what are the correct bolts and color for the bracket that the lock bolt attaches to? What is the proper length of the lock bolt for Gold Lines?

What can I do to close those holes up just a little bit?

Finally, on the subject of bolts, what bolt holds the antenna to the mounting bracket. Mine is stripped and needs to be heli-coiled, but I want to do it with the right thread for the right bolt.

    Thanks

Larry, try Paragons catalog they give a lot if bolts sizes and the thread count for the bolts you need.

Thanks Mike. I will check them out. Hopefully they will indicate what the markings on the head should be.

        Larry -

The tub attaching bolts are phosphated indented hex-head 5/16" fine-thread self-tapping type (with separate flat washers), into plain pierced holes in the frame and gas tank support. When the holes are stripped, I use 5/16" aluminum Riv-Nuts and 5/16"-18 bolts; permanent repair, nobody will ever know the difference.

That is great! I really like that idea. Thanks for the help.

What markings are on the bolts? Attached are pictures of mine.

            Larry,

those ar hardware store bolts. The 4 bolts that hold the tub are the same as the brake and fuel line, they have a 1/2" recessed hex head 5/16-24 thread and usually have E for thier headmarking.

The power antenna mounting bolts are 7/16" recessed hex head 1/4-28 thread, some different headmarking are EL, SEMS ELH and NL.

            Hope this helps, Rich

              Larry -

Picture of original spare tire tub bolts below (fine photo by Wayne Midkiff ); the bolts used separate flat washers (in spite of the JG description that says they didn't). Richard Fortier now makes the 1/4"-28 antenna mounting bolts Rich noted above.

Larry -- per '65 AIM, UPC U69, Sheet B2, that bolt is the same #9418423 as the 2 bolts that mount the bracket to the splash panel shield.

If nobody does so in the meantime, tomorrow I will remove one and post pics. Easier to do with side exhausts .

Thanks, I look forward to seeing it.

Larry -- here's the '65-6 antenna bracket bolts; they look like indented head with a captured lock washer. Should be same bolt for bracket to P.Ant. motor case.

Headmark seems to be 4 rings with "ELH" in the center, although I could be wrong, given the condition. It measures (caliper) 0.915" overall length, and 0.245" diameter on the threaded portion. I don't know what that makes it, a #10 - 32 thrds/inch, or a 1/4"-28 -- hard to measure this small fine thread stuff.

                      Wayne,

Thanks for the pics. Now I need to get under my car and see if I need 1,2, or 3 of these.

                        Nice picture Wayne,

the threads are 1/4-28. The bolt that attaches to the bottom of the antenna. is 1/3 as long as the bracket bolt. Don't use a long bolt as you could damage the housing when tightening.

Re: Tire Tub and Antenna Mounting Hardware

Looks like all three bolts need to be replaced. The two holding the bracket appear correct, but they were painted black and when I stripped them they are so pitted that you can not see the markings. In general is Paragon the best place for fasteners/bolts? Does the stuff they sell generally have the correct markings? I am finding quite a few that are not correct and want to start the process of replacing them.

One more thing, since I will be pulling all of this down I want to make sure whan I go back together it is all correct. What is the proper color of the bracket? right now it is a somewhat glossy black.

                          Thanks,

                          Larry
