    Re: Need new floor jack

I too am in the market for a reliable floor jack and have been reading archive posts along with this thread. There are many hydralic floor jacks available today for a nominable fee. Is there any difference in quality and performance between hydralic and the old fashion way?

      All,

Thanks for all the recommendations! I wound up getting the Hein-Warner 93642. I am very happy with it. It is well built and allows for a controlled rate of descent. Excellent, Smithers!

My 1968 Walker 1 1/4 ton is still working fine. It is so old it has a riveted serial number plate on it. Dale

Joe, Thank you so much for the recommendation. I still have not purchased a floor jack and the descent speed/handling was of utmost concern. Thank you for your reference.

            Valeria,

You're welcome! The only downside is that it's HEAVY!$#% Over one hundred pounds if I remember correctly. It does roll around just fine once you wrassle it down to the floor. I suppose the weight is a byproduct of its construction. To say that it's heavy duty would not do it full justice. I'm proud to say that the good ole US of A can still build some things very well.

<My Carquest floor jack droops over time. It also is not very controllable when letting the car down.

Have you tried putting in some more jack oil?

I have a Hein Warner that was about $100 when I bought it in 62. Every few years I add some jack oil and it's like new.

              It's steel and heavy.

Just realized the jack is the same age as the Corvette!

<I bought a 1.5 ton "China" jack. After trying to put it on jack-stands the first time it scared me so badly that I re-boxed it and returned it. ...

<Not that I'm an expert but I bought a higher quality Sears jack (Craftsman Professional 3 ton Aluminum Floor Jack, this is the link) and I feel safe.

Twice you mention safety. I hope you're not getting under the car when it's on the jack??? I assume you're using jackstands.

Of couse I use jack stands, in fact I also put a bottle jack under the front crossmember to support the front heavy 454 I crawl under. Added safety without the sag.

I spent a lot of money making the car look god, I'd like to enjoy it for a while!

                    Bob,

The Carquest jack never was very controllable as far a rate of descent goes. I would go so far as to call it a digital jack. Once you hit the release point, the car came down in a big 'ol hurry! It wasn't very old, I got it in 2005 or 2006. So I just chucked it in the trash and bought the Hein-Werner. I'm happy with my decision.
