68 alternator question, the original is supposed to be 37a but advance says 60

a new one from advance on their computer list I need a 60 amp..why such a difference?

my car is a 68 427/390 without air.

I talked to john pirkle but he said it would be 279 shipped! too much for me to give for a alternator

    Brandon,

Your car should have a 37 amp alternator if it is a base unit with 300 to 400 hp and not Transistorized Ignition. If it has TI a 42 amp is required. If it has AC, then 61 amp is necessary.

If you ever think you're going to have the car judged, buy the Pirkle alternator. You will be very glad you did.

      Brandon-----

Commercial alternator rebuilders often "consolidate" alternator amp output ratings. For example, a 60 amp unit will SERVICE all 60 amp and lower apps.

The unit you get from Advance Auto won't be like the one you would get from John Pirkle. Both will be FUNCTIONAL but that's about it. $279 for a Pirkle restoration sounds cheap to me.

I'd like to but 300 bucks or an alternator..

just a lot considering I have re-chroming to get done, new tires etc..i might bite the bullet but I was just confused on why they say it shows a 60amp for my car I told them it doesn't have air or nothing.

John said he had one dated for october 2nd.

I assume he means it's dated 7K2 right?

my cars build date in the door jam is D07 for nov 7th 1967.

He asked for my vin number and it is 404080

he said ya looks like nov. 10th...now my corvette birthday book if I'm looking at it right by my vin says between nov. 7th and nov. 8th. So, not sure why he said the 10th?

but either way a october 2nd 1967 dated alternator would work I guess.

anyone have any pics of a pirkle restored alternator?

I purchased the following parts for my '68 from John Pirkle and have never lost a point on any of his restored parts:

            1. Alternator 3. Horn Relay
            2. Starter 4. Voltage Regulator

He has been restoring electrical parts a long time. It's buy it from John and forget it. It's done right!

Brandon I traded in my 68's 327/350 starter and alternator to avoid paying a core charge on rebuilt starter and alternator on my original owner 68. This was when NCRS was for only the solid axle Corvettes and I was not a member. The rebuilt starter and alternator are still functioning. What I can't figure out is why would I write down the numbers on my starter and keep the pully from the original factory supplied alternator.

                Brandon,

If you have your original alternator, there is another option, see this thread:

For my 67 1100693 37A alternator, I just bought a gypo Kragens 61 amp replacement, exchanged the rotor and stator, a few other parts and my original alternator has worked just fine since. Of course, I also did a little refinish work to it.
