    cam bearing choices for a 61, 283

Was going to order Durabond cam bearings for a stock hi perf 283 rebuild. There are choices......standard, hi perf and coated hi perf cam bearings to fit a 61, 283. Best choice for the street?

Any thoughts on durabond or other brands of cam bearings for a stock build 283 with the 097 cam and FI?

    Thanks,
    Joe

    Joe,

I would order whatever the stock Federal Mogul parts are for your engine and be done with it. I am not sure what Durabond is as I have never heard of that brand..

I am not positive but the rear cam bearing may have been wider on early chevy's but I think as long as the oil holes line up the narrower bearing is OK.

If it were MY engine, I'd go with the better quality parts.
This is the kind of part that CANNOT be judged by even the most discriminating and knowledgable NCRS judge!
ALTHOUGH, if someone comes up with a way to examine cam bearings in an ASSEMBLED engine----------------------------please notify me as to how it was done. I want to learn this trick!

Try Clevite 77 Bearing they Are Pretty Much As Good As It Gets For This Application I Have Used Them In More Motors Than I Can Remember.

Cam bearings are usually not a critical item as far as being high stress/high wear or power robbing components. Certainly in a mild engine build such as yours, with very small loads on the camshaft, I see no reason not to use direct replacements from known names such as Clevite or Federal Mogul. Both are conventional steel backed bi-metal type.

As far as coated bearings are concerned, they are much more important from a power production standpoint, when used on the throw journals and to a slightly lesser extent on the main journals.

Dura-Bond is a product of Melling Engine Parts. I see no reason to use another brand as Melling has made quality parts for years.

Durabond is the absolutely best cam bearing manufacturer out there. Period. Most other cam bearings have an interlocking seam (which is usually difficult to see). Durabond are "seamless" and more perfectly round. I would NEVER use anything other than Durabond. NEVER.

I think the standard bearings would be fine for your application, but if you wish you can use either of the hi-perf models for your street application.

GM used interlocking cam bearings for years and may still use them.

Time/effort/money is best spent addressing actual OE reliability/durability issues such as early SB connecting rods and early BB valve springs.

I don't recall ever hearing that OE/OE equivalent cam bearings are a reliability/durability issue.

Yes, you're right; cam bearings are usually not a wear or other problem area. However, Durabond cam bearings are more-or-less competitive price-wise with others. So, why use anything else?

                      Thank you for your thoughts!

Devil is in the details especially with todays company consolidations, product modifications and off shore manufacturing, it is good to know we can still rely on todays cam bearings.

after you install the cam bearings check the cam for fit as it is not fun to change a cam bearing with the rotating assy in the block. been there done that also.
