    Replacing fuel pump C2

    I need to replace the fuel pump and the flex line to the pump on my 65 L78, no air. I have read through the posts on how much fun this is going to be.

    My question is how best to do this without spilling fuel. Will it run once I disconnect the hose?

    I have nearly a full tank of gas and want to minimize any spillage as my garage is under the house. I did this abut 30 years ago but don't remember if fuel spillage was a problem.

    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    clamp the short piece of rubber tubing between the fuel gauge sending unit in the tank and the main steel fuel line going foreward. good luck,mike

      Alternatively, you could go to a car parts place and get a siphon pump and pump the gas out of the tank.

        If I don't crimp a rubber line with a clamp, as Mike suggested, I'll cap the open end either with a piece of fuel line plugged at one end or with one of the gazillion plastic plugs and caps in the shop.

          John, Ive Done Quite A Few Small Block Fuel Pumps Over Years, Being A Mech. For 35 Yrs.- If You Can Get Your Hands On A Plastic Pinch Off Tool At The Local Parts Store They Work Great And There Easy On The Rubber Hoses, The Rear Tank Area Is Where To Pinch Off, Then Take Out The 9/16 Bolt On The Front Area Of Block Just In Front Of The Pump. Which Is 1/2 Long Bolt Which Lets You Access The Pump Push Rod, Then You Take A 1" Long Or So And Thread It In Til It Contacts The Pump Push Rod This Bolt Will Only Need To Just Contact The Rod And Maybe A 1/8 Turn , This Will Hold The Rod So It Doesnt Drop Down And Make The Job A Pain In The *** . Then Remove The Hoses And Bolts To Pump, For Saftey Reason I Dont Rec.the Typical Drop Light Near The Fuel Line Or Pump (a Big Fire Hazard).

            I use a pair of plastic hose-pinch pliers that have a locking sleeve and rounded jaws so it won't damage the hose; your FLAPS should have them.

            If you have a factory cam, setting the crank at #1TDC on the compression stroke should place the pump pushrod on the base circle of the cam lobe that drives it (less fighting the spring).

              I remember using a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension to get to the bolts, this helps with clearance. I think the bolt head is 7/16 so use a six point socket.

                The job is easier if you remove the engine first.

                  if you take vice grips with flat, not curved jaws, and put a 1 1/2 piece of old fuel line over each jaw, you can safely clamp the rubber fuel line without any damage. free tool [might work with the curved jaws too].
