I had the heads on my 64 327-300HP rebuilt along with rest of the long block. I noticed that the machine shop assembled the heads with rubber umbrella seals on both the intake and exhaust and also used the stock metal cups on top. I can't see if the rubber ring seals are there also with out pulling a valve spring. Assuming the rubber o-rings are also installed should I be concerned that the guides won't get enough oil?

Jeff,
I am not a machinest or trying to be a smart a-- but did you call the shop and express this concern?? Sounds like a reasonable question to me.- Top

Re: One for the Small Block Heads Experts
Jeff,
If you had new cast iron guides installed sized correctly with new valves the original style O-rings should be all you need, after all that's all GM built it with originally.
On the other hand the rebuilder might have not replaced the guides and is just making sure it does not burn oil (since the clearance is opened up over the years) by adding umbrella seals. Not a good thing.......- Top

Re: One for the Small Block Heads Experts
I did talk with the machinest first and he says he typically installs the umbrella seal in addition to the o-ring. The guides were replaced as were the valves. When I questioned him on the double seals and getting enough oil to the stems he replied that all modern heads have positive seals and they get enough oil. I just wanted some other opinions.- Top
