    '56- '62 3-Speed Tail Housing Removal

I am having a three speed transmission being built for my '56. Unable to find a correct tail housing, I am going to use one that I have that is not the correct number or date. Can anyone tell me how to remove the tail housing from the rest of the transmission? I have the 5 bolts and speedometer gear removed. The tail housing with internals will only move back about an inch or inch and a half from the main housing. Can anyone tell me how to remove the tail housing from the main case and then to remove the internals from it? Thanks in advance!

    Brooks -

The tailhousing isn't going to come off without complete disassembly of the transmission, starting at the front. The procedure is described in great detail, with lots of photos, in both the 1957 Passenger Shop Manual and the 1961 Passenger Shop Manual.

John, I have to disagree with you on this. Earlier today I spoke by phone with the fellow building my engine and transmission. He told me about a snap ring that did not have holes for the pliers. It is visible when you remove the 5 bolts and speedometer gear so that you can slide the tail housing about an inch or so from the main case. He told me to push the ends apart to open them with special snap ring pliers. When I did this(my pliers will lock open) the tail housing separated from the main case. I still have the shaft, gears and a large bearing which somehow need to be removed from the tail housing. I guess it is one step at a time. Nothing like another opportunity to have 90 wt gear oil all over your hands and arms.
