    C3 Side Glass - How Do I?

I believe that side glass is different for a coupe than a convertible in early C3's. I'm planning a hunt in Carlisle and would appreciate any advice on how to field-differentiate coupe from convertible windows.

I've searched archives and I have the AIM, but can't find detail to help me know what to look for in identifying the one (convertible/Astro Ventilation) I need.

    Anyone know?

    Don:

Here is a scan that I took from a 1972 Corvette brochure. In the Corvette silhouettes, you can see the different shape of the opening above the door between the Coupe and Convertible. Obviously, the door windows for the Coupe and Convertible follow their respective door/roof opening shapes. This should be an easy identifier for your door window search.

Be aware that 1968 model side glass has a different mounting design that requires holes for attaching to the window regulator.

Also. if you are going to go through the NCRS judging process, the word "AstroVentilation" is used only through the 1974 model. Also, date codes, tinting and glass thickness are considered.

Re: C3 Side Glass - How Do I?

        Thanks guys.

James: I shoulda seen the different shape in the trailing edge (duh). Was too focused on part number ID.

Don: Thanks for the heads up on the details. I was aware of the AstroVentilation aspect and the thickness of repro vs OEM. It was you that found my LH date code to be "off" when you judged it in 2007.

I'll measure my RH glass to make sure my Carlisle treasure hunt considers the correct thickness.

Your note mentions "1968 model side glass has a different mounting design that requires holes for attaching to the window regulator." My '72 AIM shows 5 holes for mounting. Are the hole quantities and/or locations different?

Trying to make sure I know what I'm looking for...

        Thanks.

          Hi Don,
I've looked for door glass at Carlisle too.
If I may, I'll suggest you carry a small bottle of glass cleaner and a wipe of some sort. The glass I found that I was interested in was usually quite dirty, so I'd need to clean it to see what condition it was really in. The sellers always allowed me to do it after asking; I guess in hope of selling it.
          Good Hunting!!!
          Regards,

            Don,

            How far off?
I've seen them off a long way on original cars.

Errr, after that car's build date, Patrick. My guess is someone "needed" to get into the car and didn't have a key .

Think I read that glass dated 1 year ahead of body's build date will pass muster. Agree?

Yes, all glass is allowed one year prior to build date.

There are 5 mounting holes in 1974 glass and I believe the '72 glass is the same. However, it is my recollection that the '68 glass had a different hole pattern and i don't know the quantity of holes. Any original used glass with a correct date code for your car should have the correct 5 hole pattern.

Perhaps someone with access to '68 glass can clarify the hole pattern and the number of holes.

To tell coupe glass from convertible just look at the top rear corner if it is 90 degrees it's coupe glass. Convertible glass is about 115 degrees. Most 68 glass I see at swap meets has metal plates still attached to the bottom side the plates were only used in 68. Convertible glass is hard to find and the top front corners many times are chiped from hitting the trim attachment screw in that area.
