    '68 Dipstick tube

    Hi guys,

I am in the process of moving my shop, and in the process, I noticed that the dipstick tube had broken off where it goes into the engine (300 HP automatic). I ordered a new one from Paragon (which is not correct, compared to what I have left from the broken one which is from an original motor 100,000 mile car). Anyway, I am going to put it in this weekend (it's just a driver), but all of my manuals, etc. are either packed away or in transit. Can anyone tell me if the dipstick tube should be left natural or painted engine color. I have looked real hard at the dipstick tube that came out of the engine, and can see no paint on it, but I thought they were painted with the engine.

I can say for 100% sure atleast on big block 68's and probably other years it's natural.

I think it's natural on small blocks too, on older and newer years than yours.

This is a piece of cake issue... Check your copy of the AIM book. Do you see the parts (tube and gage) called out for installation onto the engine (Section UPC 6 or the applicable 'L-Series' engine option at the end of the AIM book)?

If so, they were installed on the St. Louis final assy line and did NOT come with the basic engine sub-assy from Flint/Tonawanda. Therefore, they weren't present when the engine was painted Chevy orange...
