    C-1 windshield replacement

Putting new dash pad on 58 and decided to replace the rubber gasket surrounding the windshield while it was off the car. Came off easily but is an absolute nightmare to get the rubber seal and frame back around the windshield.
Is there a specific method, or certain steps that need to be followed?
    Need help/advice.

    Ted,
There is a very comprehensive set of instructions for replacing the windshield in a C1 in the ST-12 manual. See section Body 1-4.
I have followed it many times and it works great.
Make sure you lubricate when called for and have a good rubber hammer available. You can not complete the job without the hammer.
    Good luck,
    Bruce B.

If I remember correctly, I placed my seal in the sun to heat and soften it. Heated, it will stretch more and make it a little easier to fit around the glass.

      Good luck,

It is the Chevy factory service manual for solid axle cars. It is a must have if you own one of these cars. Should be available in the NCRS bookstore.

It helps to have a friend assist in the gasket installation around the glass. I actually used 5 foot long bar clamps (typically used on wood projects) to hold the gasket on the sides of the glass while I worked on the top and bottom; and my neighbors hands as well. I tightened the bar clamps gently against the glass; very gently.

i never lubricate them, because they tend to slip apart anyway, i use 3m windoweld urethane to seal them,[ in and out ] particularly useful if you have an old shrunken up soft top, nothing is a aggravating as pulling your new windshield out of the frame when you try to latch the top, if your tabs are broken send them to ccentral or al knoch to be repaired, start at one of the corners and use masking tape to hold the seal on the windshield, once you get it all the way on it tends to stay put and you can remove the tape, if you have to pound on the frame to get it to fit, you are doing something wrong, leave the header connected to the posts, but loosen the screws, make sure the t nuts on the lower channel stay in the correct position, it helps if you can hold your breath for about 3 hours, then you can breath easy, normally i tell people to use a glass shop, but odds are none of the techs have ever done one of these and may know less than you do. good luck, you can do it

Very helpful thanks. It still takes alot of manipulation and four hands to get it done.
The instructions indicate to put the 8 bolts through the rubber and bottom frame. Does that mean to punch holes in the weather strip to accommodate the bolts.
