    63 Parking Break

When I pull the parking break handle the little cog does not lock in placeand the handle goes right back in. I have been able to poke the cog with a screwdriver to get it to work for awhile but this is frustrating. What is the permanent fix for this problem?

    John,

Going from memory there is a small spring inside that mechanism to keep downward pressure on the pawl. I think you will have to remove the assembly from the car to really see what's going on inside, it could just be dirty.

Disconnect the cable from under the car and from the steering column bolt then remove the clip from the firewall side of the car. Under the dash, remove the two bolts holding the bracket and the wiring from the brake switch. Be very careful with the brake switch $$$ and the inside stop that's usually attached under the insulation as it will tear the insulation when removing.

If your 63 is early the oil pressure line will not be in the way, if late I think you will need to remove that also.
