    Side terminal battery disconnect switch

    Has anyone heard or have first hand knowledge that these blade type disconnect switches are unsafe? Please advise.

    Unsafe, how? I have used one for twenty years with no issues.

      Hello Peter;
      They are only UNSAFE IF battery gasses are trapped in the area of the switch when the connection is made or opened.

      There would have to be other problems, like an overcharge situation causing the battery to create excess gas, with no ventilation.

      Then any electrical arc will cause an explosion.

      Very dangerous.

        Hello again Peter;

        Let me add all our collector cars have battery disconnects for safety and longevity of the batteries.

        Always turn your face away as you are making or breaking any battery connection.!!
        We have seen many horror stories.

        Google car "battery explosion"

          This is another reason why I suggest battery switches that are installed remote from the battery. An easy, low cost example is made by Hella. It has a removable key for added security and is available at almost every marine supply store. On the C-1 an ideal location is the passenger side of the transmission tunnel close to the foot rest. In this location the switch is unnoticed by the casual observer, the key can be reached from the drivers seat, and only one new wire is required from the switch to ground since the battery cable that normally goes to ground is long enough to reach the switch. I don't know how NCRS feels about drilling a hole in the transmission tunnel to allow the snout of the switch to protrude into the footwell area, but I have always been pleased with that switch location.

            10 years and counting now for my 72 with blade disconnector installed. No issues. Zero. I haven't heard of any either.

              I've been using a blade for over 15 yrs and no problems. Just make sure you connect it to the neg. term. Really extends the life of a battery
