1969 White dust shields at firewall

The TIM states that later in the production year, the White plastic shields were changed to a Phosphate coated metal.

I have a last day production car which had White plastic shields. They were yellowed and brittle with age and in fact, one shatterred when I dropped it.

They appeared to be original as did the hardware when I removed it.

What direction do I take as far as correct restoration? Was the Grey Phosphate metal shields well documented, or do I trust what appears to be original to my car?

John, my old 1969 small block convertible was built the last week of production, Q 15. It had the white plastic shields. The car was restored before i bought it so I can not say for certain that it originally came with the white shields. Looking over copies of my old judging sheets ( 8 years old) I see no deductions for the white shields. Also I thought the metal shield mounting points for one side or the other (drivers-passenger) had a different mounting location than the plastic shields. It's been a long time, so I may be wrong on that. However I seem to think that is why I never changed over to the metal shields. In your case, if it were me and I was reasonably sure the white plastic shields were original to the car I would stay with white plastic. We are always learning something new on these old cars. It may be white plastic was used to deplete left over parts inventory at the end of the year. I'm sure those with knowledge of very late production 1969 bow tie cars will have valuable input on this. Nice coupe. ( Just found another envelope of judging sheets. I did get a one point deduction for "white shields" at one of the meets. )
